!The Revolutionary War pension application file of John McDaniel
(W.3845) indicates that John died about 1811. Here are abstracts of
the most important documents in the file:
Rockingham County
On July 4, 1840, appeared Elizabeth McDaniel, a resident of
Rockingham Co., age 79 yrs. Widow of John McDaniel. John served
in the Rev. War, in a company of cavalry or light horse. He came to
her father's house very shortly after the war, wearing a horseman's
cap covered with bearskin and a blue coat trimmed with red. Elizabeth
was married to John within 2-3 yrs. after end of the war. Her maiden
name was Elizabeth Crawford. John has been dead 29 or 30 yrs.
Rockingham County
On July 4, 1840, appeared Zachariah Crawford, age 65 or 66 yrs. Well
acquainted with John McDaniel. Remembers that John came to the
house of Zachariah's father when Zachariah was 6 or 7 yrs. old, shortly
after end of Rev. War, wearing a horseman cap covered with bearskin
and other soldier's clothing. John was taken prisoner at Charlestown,
S.C., but was soon exchanged. John was in the cavalry or light horse
during part of his enlistment, and was under the command of Capt.
Laird during part of his enlistment. John has been dead 29 yrs.
[Marriage bond]
John McDonold and John Ewing of Rockingham Co. are bound to Patrick
Henry, Governor, in the sum of 50 pounds. Executed this ___ day of
1786 in the 11th yr. of the Commonwealth.
Condition: The above John McDonold hath this day obtained license to
marry Elizabeth Crawford, dau. of Martin Crawford of this County.
Rockingham County
On July 4, 1840, appeared James Meadows, age 78 yrs. Well
acquainted with John McDaniel. John was enlisted for the Rev. War by
Capt. David Laird in Orange County. James's brother, Francis Meadows,
was enlisted under Capt. Laird at the same time.
!The following item appears in Chalkley's Chronicles, vol. I, page 496:
"June 19, 1764. John Ramsey chosen guardian by Mary McDonall aged
16; John McDonall aged 14; and the Court appoints him guardian for
Francis, Hugh, Rebecca, William, Elizabeth and Samuel McDonnall, all
orphans of John McDonall." The orphan John of this record would have
been born about 1750, which seems too early compared to my John
McDaniel's 1786 marriage.
