Individual:
BIRTH DATE/PLACE: Federal Census; 1850; Madison County, Virginia;
page 83.
DEATH DATE: Mourning is listed with her family in the 1860 census
(Madison Co., p. 97), but not in the 1870 census (Madison Co., p. 61).
According to family tradition (expressed by Culton Goodall, grandson of
Philander Goodall and his second wife, Jemima Gallehugh, during an
interview with Wm. Scott Simpson, Sr., on December 5, 1999), Mourning
died shortly before her "youngest son" (who would have been Thomas)
returned from serving as a soldier in the Confederate army, because she
thought he had died of illness while serving. The records of Thomas J.
Goodall's service in the Confederate army (at the National Archives in
Washington, D.C.) indicate that he was "absent sick" in the Confederate
hospital at Charlottesville, Virginia, from August 1862 until the end of the
year; that he was absent without leave from the hospital beginning
December 20, 1862; and that he "returned from desertion" in late 1863 or
early 1864. My assumption is that Thomas deserted because his mother
was very sick, and that he returned to the army after she died.
The following entry, dated September 11, 1809, appears in the
Shenandoah County, Virginia, Minute Book for 1806-1810: "Overseer of
Poor Dist. #1 to bind Lewis Marshall, orphan of Joseph, to George B.
Mich to learn the craft of a tailor. 14 yrs old Apr. 11, last." Shenandoah
County and Madison County, where Mourning was married in 1818, were
contiguous until 1831, when Page County was created. Perhaps
Mourning was also a child of Joseph Marshall.
Family tradition asserts that Mourning Marshall came from Luray,
Virginia.
The only Marshall in the 1799 personal property tax list of Shenandoah
County, Virginia, is a William Marshell, with one tithable (http://freepages.
misc.rootsweb.com/~vataxlists/Shenandoah/1800-index.htm). William
Marshall also appears in the 1789 personal property tax list for the same
county.
One William Marshall died intestate in Shenandoah County sometime before
1828, but his estate settlement, recorded December 23, 1828, does not
list any of his heirs (Will Book O, page 503).
