Individual:
!Birth date is based entirely on the assumption that she married at
about 21 years of age.
!Sally Hensley may have been a daughter of one Samuel Hensley.
(1) The bondsman on Sally's marriage to Jarrot Suddarth was
Samuel Hensley, but he did not state his relationship to
Sally (Albemarle County Marriages, 1780-1853; by John Vogt &
T. William Kethley, Jr.; vol. II; page 505).
(2) On October 16, 1812, Jarrot Sudderth was bondsman on
the marriage of Thomas Hundley and Elizabeth Hensly, daughter
of Samuel Hensley (Albemarle County Marriages, 1780-1853; by
John Vogt & T. William Kethley, Jr.; vol. II; page 506). (This is
apparently the Thomas Hundley, age 58, and Elizabeth Hundley,
age 57, in the 1850 census of Roanoake County, Virginia.)
(3) Jarot Suddarth (transcribed "Jhrot Suddarth" by the clerk
in recording the will) was a witness to the will of Benjamin
Hensley, which names Samuel Hensley as one of his children
(Albemarle County, Virginia, Will Book 3, page 51). The will was
executed on January 17, 1788, and probated on October 9, 1788.
(But this was seven years before Jarrot married Sally Hensley.)
The will names Laurence Suddarth (Jarrot's father) as one of the
executors.
(4) The wife of Samuel Hensley is said to have been named
"Sibba" (although I have not yet seen primary-source evidence
of that). My Sally Hensley named one of her daughters "Cebitha,"
and "Sibba" could be a nickname for "Cebitha." (However, the
first name of Cebitha Suddarth, Sally's daughter, is never written
that way in the census records: she is "Bicy" in 1850 (Albemarle
County, page 279A), "Tabitha" (erroneously) in 1860 (Albemarle
Co., p. 599), "Sabitha" in 1870 (Albemarle Co., p. 456A), and
"Sibitha" in 1880 (Albemarle Co., E.D. 7; page 172B).
!The following entry appears in the Albemarle County (Virginia)
Court Order Book for 1800-1801 (as transcribed in Albemarle County
Road Orders 1783-1816; by Nathaniel Mason Pawlett (Dec. 1975,
revised Apr. 2004); published by Virginia Highway & Transportation
Research Council; available on-line at
http://www.virginiadot.org/vtrc/main/index_main.htm):
"1 December 1800, Ord. Bk. 1800-1801. p. 246
"Samuel Hensley is Appointed Surveyor of the Road from the County
line to the green Mountain Road with the usual gang in the Room
of Samuel Irvin"
This is the only mention of Samuel Hensley in "Albemarle County Road
Orders 1783-1816."
!Some researchers assert that the wife of Samuel Hensley was
named Sibba. One Sibba Hensley appears in the 1810 census of
Albemarle County, Virginia (page 6B), with one male under 10,
one male 10-15, one female 16-25 and one female 26-44. If the
age of this oldest female is correct, then she cannot be the mother
of my Sally Hensley; to be age 44 in 1810, she would have been
born about 1766, and my Sally Hensley was born no later than
1780 (to be age 15 when she married).
!Some researchers assert that Sally's father was the same Samuel
Hensley whose will was executed in Pendleton County, Kentucky,
on October 4, 1830, and probated on January 25, 1831
(Pendleton County, Kentucky, Deed Book F, page 58 [in abstract
from another researcher]). The will mentions a wife Mary, and
children Benjamin, Mary, David, Richeson, John, and Zachariah.
I have seen no primary-source evidence that Samuel Hensley of
Albemarle County and Samuel Hensley of Pendleton County are
the same person (but see the next note). Other researchers
assert that Samuel Hensley, father of Sally, died in Albemarle
County, Virginia, before 1810; but if that were true, he could not
have consented to the marriage of his daughter, Elizabeth, in
1812 (see above).
!There is evidence that at least one of the children of Samuel
Hensley of Pendleton County, Kentucky, was born in Virginia.
The 1850 census of Pendleton County has a Benjamin Hensley,
age 41 and born in Virginia (p. 690B).
!The 1830 census of Pendleton County, Kentucky (page 2) has a
Samuel Hinsley with one male under 5, two males 5-10, one male
10-15, one male 70-80, one female 10-15, and one female 40-50.
