Individual:
!DEATH DATE/PLACE: Estate settlement of Henry WALTER, Jr.;
Shenandoah County,Virginia; Will Book S, page 454 (first entry in
the accounts is dated Oct. 3, 1816).
!FATHER: Will of Henry Walter; Shenandoah County, Virginia;
Will Book N, page 418 (executed May 3, 1823). The will gives
specific bequests to several named children, but refers to "the
Children of my son Henry Walter." Also, the estate settlement of
this Henry Walter (WB T:535) refers to "Levi Walter son Hy Jr.," and
to others of the children of Henry Walter Jr. mentioned in Henry Jr's
estate settlement (WB S:454).
!MARRIAGE: Marriage Bonds, 1798-1801; Shenandoah County, Virginia
(Library of Virginia microfilm #72) (bond of Henry Walter Jr. and
John Teter Clem, for Henry to marry Catharine Clem). Since Henry's
father, Henry Walter, was married to a Catherine upon his death, this
could, conceivably, be a late marriage of the elder Henry. But the
following facts indicate that it is more likely the marriage of this
younger Henry:
(1) The marriage bond calls him Henry Walter Jr.
(2) This, the younger Henry Walter, was of precisely the right age,
in 1800, to be marrying for the first time.
(3) One Catharine Walter, age 64, was living in the home of Isaac
Walter, son of the younger Henry, in 1850 (see note under Catharine
Clem); thus, she was born about 1786. In contrast, the elder Henry
was born about 1750 or earlier, since his first child was born about
1771.
!Henry Walter's signature on the above-cited marriage bond reads
"Henrich Walter," in German script. Thus, he himself was probably
born in Germany, and his father certainly was.
!Birth date is based on (1) the date of his marriage, (2) the marriage
dates of certain of his siblings, and (3) the birth dates of others of
his siblings as reflected in the 1850 census. The marriage records
and census records regarding Henry's siblings provide a gap, about
1778, in the births of his parents' children.
