Individual:
UNCERTAINTY REMAINS REGARDING SOME OF THE CHILDREN OF
BENJAMIN THACKER, PARTICULARLY IN RELATION TO WHICH OF
HIS WIVES BORE CERTAIN CHILDREN.
SPOUSE (Ruth Bowls): "The Douglas Register, Being a Detailed
Record of Births, Marriages and Deaths Together with Other
Interesting Notes, as Kept by the Rev. William Douglas, from 1750-
1797" (in abstract at www.familysearch.org, citing FHL microfilm
#883694 Item 5). The entries for the births of Benjamin's children
Marianne, Benjamin, and Nathaniel gives his wife's full (maiden) name.
SPOUSE (Neffeny Emmerson): "The Douglas Register, Being a
Detailed Record of Births, Marriages and Deaths Together with Other
Interesting Notes, as Kept by the Rev. William Douglas, from 1750-
1797" (in abstract at www.familysearch.org, citing FHL microfilm
#883694 Item 5). Marriage of Benjamin Thacker and Neffeny
Emmerson.
SPOUSE (Martha Sprouse): Fluvanna County Marriages, 1781-1849;
by John Vogt & T. William Kethley, Jr.; page 50. This is the only
marriage of Benjamin Thacker to a Martha (see reference to
Benjamin's will below).
The following facts indicate that it was the same Benjamin Thacker
who married and had children in Goochland County (1757-1769),
who married in Fluvanna County in 1783, and who died in Albemarle
County about 1799:
(1) Two of the three children recorded as born to Benjamin Thacker
in Goochland County (Benjamin and Nathaniel) are listed as children in
the will of Benjamin Thacker in Albemarle County.
(2) In 1777, Benjamin Thacker and his wife "Nephfa" sold land in
Fluvanna County (Fluvanna County Deed Book 1, page 60). "Nephfa"
seems to be a variation of Neffeny/Naphena, the bride's name in the
1767 marriage in Goochland County and the mother's name in the
1769 record of daughter Milley Thacker's birth in Goochland.
(3) The Revolutionary War pension file of Benjamin's son, Daniel,
states that he enlisted in Fluvanna County, Virginia (National Archives,
Washington, D.C.).
(4) In March 1783, Benjamin Thacker executed a deed of gift to
his son Nathaniel Thacker -- again, the name of one of the children
born in Goochland -- for land in Fluvanna County (Fluvanna DB 1:144).
(5) Also in March 1783, Benjamin executed a similar deed of gift
to his son William Thacker (Fluvanna DB 1:443). No wife of Benjamin
joined as a grantor on either deed of gift, suggesting that he had
become a widow and, thus, supporting the conclusion that he is the
same Benjamin Thacker who married Martha Sprouse in April 1783.
(6) These deeds of gift were executed about two months before
the marriage of Benjamin Thacker and Martha Sprouse (and recorded
on the day of their execution). A man might well want to deed some
of his property to his sons before remarrying late in life.
(7) Benjamin Thacker's will in Albemarle County gives his wife's
name as Martha -- the same first name as the bride in the April 1783
marriage in Fluvanna County.
(8) That the Benjamin Thacker whose will is cited below is the
same one who married Martha Sprouse in 1783 is further indicated by
his calling her "my now wife Martha" in a 1786 deed (Fluvanna Co.
DB 2:123).
DEATH DATE/PLACE, SPOUSE (Martha): Will of Benjamin Thacker;
Albemarle County, Virginia; Will Book 4; page 28. Benjamin and Martha
were married at least by 1784, when they executed a deed together
(Fluvanna Co., Va., DB 2:32).
One Benjn. Thacker decd. is included in the 1800 personal property
tax list for Albemarle County (as abstracted in The Virginia Genealogist;
vol. 3; number 4 (Oct.-Dec. 1959); page 164.)
On 12 Sep 1793, Benjamin Thacker and his wife Martha, of Albemarle
County, deeded 100 acres in Albemarle County to Nathaniel Thacker of
the same county, for 40 pounds (Albemarle Co., Virginia, DB 11:64-65).
