!Birth date is based entirely on the assumption that he married at about
25 years of age. I have been unable to find this couple in the 1850 census.
!This is probably the same Robert Tisdale who lived in Augusta County,
Virginia, in 1810 and 1830 (1810 census, p. 389; 1830 census, p. 107).
The household in 1810 had three children, all under age 10 -- precisely
consistent with an 1803 marriage date. Also, there is no marriage of a
Robert Tisdale in Augusta County, either in First Marriage Record of
Augusta County, Virginia, 1785-1813 (and Supplement), by the Col.
Thomas Hughart Chapter, D.A.R.; or in Augusta County Marriages,
1748-1850, by Vogt and Kethley.
!There is no Robert Tisdale in the 1850 mortality schedule of Augusta
County, Virginia.
!This is probably not the Robert Tisdale, age 72 and born in Virginia, who
was living in Adams County, Indiana, in 1850 (page 60B). Also in that
county, at the same time (page 74A), was a Robert D. Tisdale, age 45 and
born in Virginia; probably they were father and son? Both men were
married to women born in New York, ages 58 and 35 -- possibly mother
and daughter? Before 1840, these two men apparently lived in Harrison
County, Virginia (now West Virginia), based on these facts:
(1) The 1830 census of Harrison County (page 338) includes a Robert
Tisdall with four adults, whose ages match those in the 1840 census of
Adams, Indiana (except that the wife of Robert Sr. is 50-60 years old in
both 1830 and 1840 -- perhaps a case of female "age-freeze"?).
(2) Robert Jr. is listed as "Robert D. Tisdale" in both 1840 and 1850,
and one Robert D. Tisdale (same middle initial) married Manerva Forsythe
in Harrison County, Virginia on December 23, 1828 (Harrison County
Marriages, 1785-1894, by Wes Cochran). Also, the household of Robert D.
Tisdale in 1850 includes a daughter Minerva M. Tisdale, age 6.
(3) Although the wife of Robert D. Tisdale in the 1850 census is named
Mary, she was apparently his second wife, because (a) Robert is ten years
older than Mary (45 versus 35), (b) Robert Tisdale's wife in the 1840 census
is 30-40 years old, not 20-30, (c) the oldest child in the household in 1850 is
20 years old (thus probably too old to be Mary's child), and (d) in addition
to six children surnamed TISDALE, ages 20, 17, 15, 10, 8, and 6, the
household includes three more children (ages 10, 7, and 3), surnamed
GOULD -- possibly Mary's children from a previous marriage?
(4) Although two of Robert D. Tisdale's children in the 1850 census -- ages
17 and 15 -- were born in Ohio, and the youngest -- ages 10, 8, and 6 -- were
born in Indiana, the oldest, age 20 (i.e., born 1830), was born in Virginia.
(5) At the same time that these two Robert Tisdales were (apparently) living
in Harrison County, Virginia, in 1830, the family of "my" Robert Tisdale was
apparently living in Augusta County, Virginia (see above).
