Notes
Individual:
!PARENTS: Will of Shadrack Henderson; Nelson County,

Virginia; Will Book A; page 135. For a description of the evidence
that Joseph used the surname MARTIN, see my Web page at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~vagenealogy/martin.htm .
Although the will of Shadrack Henderson calls Joseph a son of Shadrack,
he may have been Shadrack's stepson instead.

!BIRTH DATE: Personal property tax lists; 1792-1795; Albemarle
County, Virginia. In 1792, Shadrack Henderson's entry in the tax
lists first included the notation "& son," and the number of white
tithables first went from one to two. In 1794 and 1795, an entry for
Joseph Henderson appears immediately after Shadrack's entry. Thus,
Joseph was the oldest son, and he turned 16 in 1792. My abstract
of these lists is on my Web site, at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~vagenealogy/albemarle_tax.txt .

!MARRIAGE: Albemarle County Marriages, 1780-1853; by John
Vogt & T. William Kethley; vol. I; page 159.

!Joseph apparently died between 1820 and 1830. He appears in the
1810 and 1820 federal censuses for Nelson County, Virginia (1810,
page 82; 1820, page 196), but not in the 1830 census. In the 1830
census for Nelson County (page 113) is a Joseph E. Martin of the
right age to this Joseph's son, with a female, age 50-60, who could
well be the widow of Joseph Sr.
