He was an officer in the New Kent County militia and rose to the rank of Colonel. He was anmed in the Commission of Peace and was on the Court from 1720 to 1767, when he was the presiding Justice of the Court. In 1724, he was Sheriff of New Kent County. He was elected to the House of Burgesses and sat in the General Assembly, from 1735 to 1743.
