Notes for WILLIAM STANFORD:
The first written record in the United States found on WilliamStanfordplaces his family in what is now Chester Co., SC, when William obtained agrant of 200 acres on the south fork of Rocky Creek in then Craven Countyin 1772. The custom was for th e head of the family to be granted 100acres as aheadright, 50 acres for a wife, and 50 acres for each childover 18. Since Williamwas granted 200 acres, he must have had a wife andone child over 18 yearsof age still living with him (probably Nancy JaneStanford).

Notes for THOMAS STANFORD, SR: Thomas Stanford appears on both the 1790and 1800 Chester Co., SC Census.
Thomas Stanford served inthe Revolutionary War in the South CarolinaLine. He served from February 1776through 1781.He wasgranted a pension onJune 10, 1837 for $50.00 per annum, payable semi-annually. Thomas' lastpayment was for Mar 4, 1843 throug h Sep 1843 and was madeat Tuscaloosa,AL. At that time, he was 87 years old and residedin Fayette Co., AL. Thisevidently was his last payment as he did not appear on the 1850 Census.
After the Rev. War, Thomas is next mentioned on 12-5-1788 when he soldthe 200 acres inherited from his father to a William Dunn. (DeedBook H,p. 339,Chester Co., SC Courthouse). He and Martha bought and sold severalother pieces of property from 178 8 to 1805 in Chester Co., SC.
About 1809/1810 Thomas and Marthaemigrated to Giles Co., TN along withseveral other Stanford familieswhere they settled on Indian Creek at theford, three miles southwest of the present BeeSprings Methodist Church. AMethodist Church was organize d in their home as early as 1810/1811.
Between October 1818 and November 1819, the Stanfords migrated to MarionCo., AL settling in Beaverton, now in Lamar Co., AL. After Martha's deathin 1821, Thomas lived with his daughter, Martha Malloy, andMourningHarrell (his niece).
