Became the most well-known hymnologist of the mid 1800's. Through his work
as a bookseller built a large and important library of historical hymnals. He
consulted on the compilation of 'Hymns Ancient and Modern' (1861) and other
important mid 19th century hymn collections. Although not trained as a
theologian or historian, he was able to give both a theological and historical
perspective in his annotations and articles, Consequently he was called the
"father of hymnology".
