[Nicholas Buck.FTW] Joseph Buck was the 2nd child of NicholasBuck by his 1st wife Mary Appolonia Kohl, born 1 Nov 1764,baptized 18 Nov 1764; sponsors, Joseph Kohl and Alberta Kohl atHaycock Twp., Bucks Co., Pa.(GR,p13) In 1787 he was assessedtaxes of 5 shillings as a singleman but for no land. However,it is assumed that he inherited about that time a portion,probably 1/2 of his Deceased father's property in SpringfieldTwp.,Bucks Co., Pa.(Pa Archives,Series 3/Vol13/p810) Heremained in Bucks Co. until about 1800, when he sold his realestate holdings to his brother, Leonard, and with his familymoved to Whitehall Twp., Northampton Co., Pa. Between 17 Feb1805-29 May 1808 he moved to Westmoreland Co. with his familyand again, after 25 Mar 1824, removed to Cambria Co., Pa.joining his son already there since about 1823. On 2nd Dec,1787, Joseph Buck married his 1st wife, Mary ElizabethMeecle/Merkle/Mackel/Mechel/Magel who was born 23 June 1769,daughter of Christopher and Magdalen Meecle(GR p177;p38). Afterbearing Joseph's 1st two children, Mary Elizabeth died on 24Aug 1794 aged "about 35 years old"(actually 25 yearsold)(GRp184) The two children were 3 and 4 years old. She wasburied at Bally, Washington Twp., Berks Co., Pa. After aneight month mourning period, on 20 Apr 1795 Joseph Buck marriedRosina Dumm, born Aug-Dec 1766, daughter of Casper and Mary EvaDumm of Moselem Springs,Richmond Twp., Berks Co., Pa.(GRp181)Joseph's third child was born 4 Apr 1796. The year 1797 musthave been a traumatic one for him and his wife. In January1797 within 4 days they lost their 2nd and 3rd son leaving onlyone, their oldest. In November 1797 they had another son. Thethree deaths of his 1st wife and 2 sons in as many years mayhave been the motivating stimulus for his decision to moveabout 1799/1800 to Whitehall Twp. Northampton Co.(now LehighCo.) where he had 4 other children. His last two children wereborn handicapped(deaf and dumb) in 1803 and 1804. Thisadditional trauma may have again motivated him to move thistime to Westmoreland Co. between Feb 1805 and May 1808. Theirfinal move after 1824 to Cambria Co. was probably motivated bya desire to be in close proximity to his sons who had precededhim there in 1823. Joseph died in Cambria Co. between 1830 and1840. His widow, Rosina (Dumm) Buck survived him, dying inCarroll Twp., Cambria Co.,Pa. between 1850 and 1860. In the1850 Census, she was living at the age of 83 in Carroll Twp.caring for her 46 year old handicapped daughter Susan. By histwo marriages, Joseph Buck had eight children.
