William Rice's Father, Henry, died the year he was born. William's moth er Ruth married Nathan Norton from New York. William did not like his step -father at all. When William was 15, they were living in Bellevue TWP. Wil liam worked riding a horse around a water tower so that water would fall i nto the engine of a steam train. Nathan Norton complained all the time abo ut how he hated Michigan and wanted to return to New York. William boug ht him a ticket and Nathan took it and left for New York.
When Sarah died William lived by himself , but would call his son Robe rt and his wife Mary Hagelshaw almost every day. One day Mary was out pain ting window frames on the chicken coop, when she came in the phone ran g. It was William. He told her he couldn't stand being alone and want ed to go into a nursing home. They took him to a home and the people the re laughed at him and told him he couldn't get social security to cov er it because he had too many affluent children.

1880 census says that William was At School in Bellevue.
The 1920 Census shows Wm. as a Grocer in a Grocery Store. He may have own ed the store. His earnings were listed as Oa or own account rather than w ages or salary.
