HAMILTON FISH, LL.D., of New York City; b. there 3d August, 1808; d. 7th September, 1893; was educated in New York; graduated Columbia College, 1827; practiced Law 1830-1847, LL.D. Columbia College 1850, Union College 1869, Harvard University 1871; President Society of Cincinnati 1854-1893; Trustee Columbia College 1840; Chairman of Trustees of Columbia College from 1859-1893; Congressman 1843-1845; Lieutenant-Governor of New York 1847-1848; Governor of New York 1849-1850; U. S. Senator 1851-1857; Secretary of State of United States 1869-1877; m. Julia KEAN, who d. 1887, dau. of Peter Philip James KEAN of Ursino, New Jersey, and gr. dau. of John Kean, member of Congress of the Confederation 1786-1789, from South Carolina, member of committee which reported the ordinance of 1787 which excluded slavery from the Northwest Territory.
