In the 1880 census his father and mother are said to have been born in RI and CT, respectively; this seems to be reversed.Brookfield, Madison, New York, p. 32D
Grandfather York was a man who liked to "stand on his own feet." He met a stranger, once, who probably wanted to flatter him and asked if he was a descendent of the Duke of York, or a relative of Senator York or of a famous lawyer York. Grandfather disclaimed relationship to any celebrities he could think of but finally informed him that he was related to the York* who was convicted of horse stealing and sent to state prison. Grandfather did not care for any second-hand glory. If anyone liked him he wanted it to be for himself, not because he was related to some noted person.
*We never heard anything else about the York horse thief. Don't even know his name.
