Individual:
0100010000000-1000010000000 ("Ira Holmes")

RELATIONSHIP TO NATHAN HOLMES OF MONTVILLE, NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT IS PLAUSIBLE BUT NOT PROVED.
Death date: Rhoda is listed as a widow in 1865 census, and he does not appear in mortality schedule; hence he died before Jun 1, 1864.
Died while ice fishing hence in wintertime. Jerome bought a cemetery lot on Feb 29, 1864.

Hiram's grave is recorded as having a G.A.R. marker. This seems odd since he died before the G.A.R. was founded, and there seems little likelihood (and no evidence) that he actually fought in the Civil War. The records of the Poolville Rural Cemetery were destroyed by a fire in 1915.

On a visit to Poolville Rural Cemetery in 1997, there was no G.A.R. marker near Hiram's gravestone. The stone was at some point broken in two and repaired, but is otherwise in fair condition. A nearby stone about 6" square, flush with the ground, marked only with a capital J, presumably marks a corner of the nearby Jackson family plot. One could imagine a rectangular plot roughly 11' x 22' in size with Hiram's gravestone near the far right corner and the "J" stone near the near left corner; there are no other large markers in that area, whose size matches that of the plot bought by Jerome Holmes the day after Hiram died. However, a few feet to the left of Hiram's gravestone is a very small stone marked only 'H.H.'. It appears possible that there were four burials in that area.

Hiram's son John also was reportedly buried at Poolville, but presumably not in the same plot.

The present records of Poolville cemetery show that it is mostly laid out in 11' x 22' plots; the map shows the buyers' names. Lot 42 is labelled J. Holmes; in front of that (toward the cemetery entrance) is lot 39, then lot 26, then lot 23, then lot 10, then lot 7, then an unnumbered lot labelled Stephen Preston, an unnumbered lot labelled Daniel Morgan and James Nichols, and an unnumbered lot labelled Walter Blanchard. Immediately to the left of these last three are unnumbered lots labelled Henry Hubbard; Alden Young and Grace Holmes; and unk. Immediately to the right of lot 26 (facing away from the cemetery entrance) is lot 25, labelled Mrs. A. Holmes.Hamilton, 2nd dist., family #325p. 4

Name: Ira Holmes.

Arrived Hamilton, Madison, New York ca 1825. However he seems not to appear as a head of household in the 1830 census. (Not only is there no Hiram Holmes listed in Hamilton, there are no Holmeses with a first name that could plausibly be a corruption of Hiram and no Hirams or Iras whose last name could plausibly be a corruption of Holmes.) There is a Hiram Holmes in Onondaga County, but his family profile doesn't fit. In the 1840 census there is no Hiram Holmes in Hamilton but there is an Ira Holmes whose family profile fits exactly.

From a comparison of his census-neighbors in 1840 to an 1853 map of Hamilton it appears Hiram was then living in or near lots 44, 45, or 56 on what is now Eaton Road. The settlement at the east end of this road is Hamilton Center; note that Jabez HOLMES's first wife and two of his sons, and Gilbert HOLMES's wife, are buried in Hamilton Center.

From a comparison of his census-neighbors in 1850, 1855, and 1860 to an 1853 map of Hamilton it appears Hiram was then living in or near lots 84, 87, or 95 on what is now the south end of South Hamilton Road. In 1860, Jerome HOLMES was apprently living very near by.

Note that this means he was living in 1840 near where Americus A. HOLMES was living in 1875, and he was living in 1850-1860 near where Americus was living in 1868.Hamilton, 2nd dist., family #410pp. 288-308Hamilton, p. 212Hamilton, p. 212Hamilton, family #59Hamilton, 2nd dist., family #410Hamilton, family #613

It appears to be a tracing of a record made at an unknown date in an unknown hand (presumably Hiram's or Rhoda's - apparently not Jerome's; the J's are different).
