Notes
Individual:

Hans and Johanna farmed near Brainard. They came over on the same ship but didn't meet until after getting to Connecticut [sic].
Norma Hanson said Hans could read and write well enough to write letters. Johanna was illiterate, probably had no education. But both always spoke English as far as Norma knew, except when Danish-speaking cousins came to visit.

But according to census records, both could read and write.

All their sons but Peter divorced and remarried at least once. "They were not a lot to be proud of."

Johanna was Hans's first wife.

A historical marker at the cemetery in Rayville reads:
"Founded 1782 Friends Burial Ground at Rayville by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) Incorporated 1902". Cemetery located on county road 13 southwest of Ford Road intersection.

(I know of no reason to believe Hans or Johanna was a Quaker.)

There is a single gravestone at the front of the cemetery, near the gate, with the inscription:
HANSON
Father Hans F.
Nov 27, 1864
June 10, 1943
Mother Johanna
July 18, 1862
Dec 4, 1940
Sharon Station (North East), Dutchess, New York at marriage (1889).
Peter was born in Sharon Station in Sept. 1890.

Hans and Johanna were not found anywhere in Dutchess County in the 1892 New York State Census.

New Lebanon, Columbia, New York in 1900.

At the time of Norma HANSON's birth they were on a farm in Chatham near Brainard. Later they moved to another farm very nearby, perhaps near the farm of a family named ASHLEY. No town and very few farms nearby, probably a couple of miles from Brainard. (Note that Riders Mills Road intersects Ashley Hill Road.)

They lived on Union Turnpike in Greenport Town, Columbia, New York in 1920. Norma Holmes has no memory of this and thinks they must have lived there only briefly.

Riders Mills (street name) in Town of Chatham, Columbia, New York in 1925.

Near the end of their lives (after Johanna was treated for a broken hip) they left the farm and moved to the village of Brainard, in a house right along Kinderhook Creek on its eastern bank where it crosses Route 20. After Johanna died Hans went into "some county home" (perhaps in Rayville) where he died.

Hans died at 14 School Street in Chatham, where he had been for 8 months; before that he lived in Nassau, Rensselaer, New York.New Lebanon, E.D. 26, family #4317 Jan 1999Greenport, E.D. 22, family #10117 Jan 1999p. 8 (note, pagination is poor)17 Jan 1999
He immigrated in 1888. Hans was a naturalized citizen of the U.S.

Immigration and naturalization information missing in 1920 census.

In US 35 years in 1925. He was not a naturalized citizen of the U.S.

Norma Holmes thought they had come into Connecticut, or gone there after arriving.New Lebanon, E.D. 26, family #43p. 8 (note, pagination is poor)17 Jan 1999
Cousin (or cousin of his son Peter?) named John - or actually "Danish version of John" (Johann? Jens?). Other relatives in Norwalk, CT including a "Danish version of John" who was about Norma's age.

Grand[son] named Gerald b. ca 1917. A John and Mi[nnie] E. HANSON, ages 37 and [3]0, lived nearby on the same road.17 Jan 1999p. 7 (note, pagination is poor)
