Individual:
Norma told this story:
When Norma was growing up, Bertha would not allow alcohol in the house. Sometimes Peter's friends would visit and bring a bottle of wine, and Bertha would have a fit.
When she was in her sixties she had some abdominal surgery. Afterward her doctor gave her a prescription: A glass of wine with dinner.
So she had some wine with dinner every day for some time, then dropped it. When she was in her 90s she started liking to have wine with her dinner again. ("The doctor prescribed it!") Her son Leslie didn't think she should have it, since by age 96 or so she was getting unsteady on her feet anyway, and since he bought her food for her, he didn't buy her any wine.
So she went out and bought it herself.
Leslie and Norma asked the doctor about it. He suggested they try diluting her wine with water to make it less harmful. So they added water to the wine in her wine bottle.
The next time they came over, they found that bottle still full, shoved to the back of the cupboard, and a new bottle of wine in front of it.
Norma also said Bertha always criticised whatever she did, while thinking Leslie could do no wrong. Once (when Bertha was in her nineties) she and Norma were sitting together and Bertha was talking about all the mistakes (according to her) Norma had made over the years. Norma said, "I've never done anything right, have I?" Bertha thought a minute and finally said, "Well, I suppose you must have..."
Richard Holmes recalls that at his sister Janet's wedding reception in 1985, Bertha (age 93) went to the buffet and filled a dinner plate to the rim and piled it high with food. And she ate it. She was a tiny woman but had a big appetite!
Attended the Methodist (and only) church in Brainard while still living near East Nassau (and probably met Peter at church activities).
