Individual:
Clarence HOLMES worked at a great variety of jobs in his lifetime, most notably as a telephone engineer and an oil burner salesman. He was able to work his way out of the great poverty of his childhood and the debts he and his family incurred, becoming in the end a successful middle-class businessman.
Member of the Board of Education of Nassau Union Free School District and active in the organization of the East Greenbush School District.
His daughter-in-law, Norma, recalled that he sometimes had a gruff manner and voice. Ken Holmes used to drive his father's car a lot, and gave rides to family and friends. Once, when Ken and Norma were first starting to see each other, she came along when he went to pick up Clarence, Vi, and Ruth. She was sitting in the back seat talking with Ruth when Clarence saw her and said to Ken, "Who in tarnation is that?" Norm sort of squeezed herself into the corner and Ruth said to her father, "Please! You're frightening the poor girl!" Another time - before or shortly after Lynn married Caroline - he upset Caroline so much at dinner she ran back to her own home.

"When I see all the activities all you people are carrying on, with the sitting room full of clothes your mother is getting ready to send the Friends, I think my part is not very important but I have just bought some new type toilet seats that are more comfortable because they are molded to fit with 11 1/2" of bearing surface instead of the usual 7 3/4"."
