    Source Text: Pension Application in Clark County, KY of September 27, 1832 states that JOEL HICKMAN was a Revolutionary War soldier. He enlisted in 1778-9 in Virginia line.. He resided in Culpeper County, VA at enlistment, discharged at Winchester, Virginia in April 1781, having served 2 years and served a tour later and was at York, short time before the capture of Cornwallis. A transcription of the original handwritten apllication follows: "STATE of KENTUCKY CLARKE COUNTY pet[ition]. On the 27th day of September 1832, personally appeared before the Hon. Rich. Frozich Judge of the Clarke Circuit Court (in open Court) JOEL HICKMAN, a resident in the County and State aforesaid, aged Seventy one years, who being first july sworn, according to law, doth in oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the act of [sic]Congrefs passed June 6th 1832. That he enlisted in the army of the United States in the year 1778 or 1779 with Captain JOHN ROBERTS (who was subsequently promoted to Major) and served in the Regiment of the Virginia line under the following named officers, to wit: Col. FRANCIS TAYLOR, Major JOHN ROBERTS, Adjutant JAMES BURTON, Capt. JAMES PURVIS, Lieut. JOHN SLAUGHTER & Ensign WM. SLAUGHTER -- that he resided at the time of his enlistment in the County of Culpeper in the State of Virginia -- and was stationed at the Albemarle Barracks, near Charlottesville, Virginia and was principally employed in guarding the prisoners taken with BURGOYNE and was discharged on the [no day or month provided] of 1781. having been in service upwards of two years (according to his best recollection). He afterward served a tour of duty in the Militia, and was at (a short time before) the Capture of Cornwallis. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or an annuity, except the present, and he declares, that his name is not on any pension roll of any agency of any state.     Source Text: According to the author, "JOEL HICKMAN, son of JAMES and his wife, HANNAH LEWIS, was born in Culpeper county, Virginia in 1761. He was a soldier of the Revolutionary war, and married in 1786, FRANCES GARETTA, daughter of Lieutenant JOHN WILSON, who was killed at the battle of Eutaw Springs, S.C. in 1781. The following inscriptions of JOEL HICKMAN and his wife, FRANCES GARETTA, may be found in the Hickman Graveyard in Clark county, Kentucky: "IN MEMORY OF FRANCES GARETTA, WIFE OF JOEL HICKMAN, BORN MARCH 3, 1768 DIED MAY 22, 1847 IN MEMORY OF JOEL HICKMAN, A SOLDIER OF THE REVOLUTION, BORN IN CULPEPER COUNTY, VIRGINIA AUGUST 10, 1761 DIED IN CLARK COUNTY, KENTUCKY JULY 16,1852

    Source Text: JOEL HICKMAN's burial took place in the Hickman Graveyard located in Lane off Jones Nursery Road, Rogers farm. Tombstone states: "Lt. JOEL HICKMAN, born Culpeper County, VA, Aug 10, 1761; died Clark County, KY July 16, 1852. A Soldier of the Revolution. He was noble, generous and brave". This tombstone and the HICKMAN GRAVEYARD are included in the book "Old Graveyards of Clark Co. Kentucky [976.954] Volume 220, page 61, compiled and edited by Kathryn Owen, POLYANTHOS, New Orleans 1975.

    Source Text: The Last Will and TESTMANENT of JOEL HICKMAN of 21 March 1849 is partially transcribed below: "In the name of God Amen. I, JOEL HICKMAN of the County of Clarke & State of Kentucky being of sound mind & disposing memory do make ordain and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following to wit, I will and direct that my just debts & funeral expenses be paid. I give and bequeath to the children of my deceased son JOHN W. HICKMAN jointly (to be equally divided among them) the sum of Eight hundred dollars; my son JOHN W. HICKMAN, their father having received in his life time seven hundred dollars. My son JAMES L. HICKMAN has already received more than his proportionate part of my estate, advanced to him at sundry times under pressing solicitations to relieve his embarrassments, Five hundred dollars to pay a Bank debt for him (out of money received from Allens for land sold for that purpose;) also a negro woman named Lucy worth four hundred dollars; also eighteen hundred & forty dollars & twenty six cents, making in all Twenty seven hundred & forty four dollars & twewnty six cents; but three hundred dollars of the above was paid him on account of that sum advanced by him to my daughter POLLY T. GILLMOUR [sic] with which he is to be credited, leaving Twety four hundred and forty four dollars & twenty six cents as the amount of the account which stands charged against him - six hundred dollars of which is included in a note dated on the 13th day of November 1839, and it is my will that he receive no more from my estate until my other children may have received as much as he has and if my estate should not be adequate to pay my other children as much, I direct that the said note of six hundred dollars due from my son JAMES L. HICKMAN be collected & dispersed equally among my other children; he is to receive his proportionate part of the same only after the others may have received as much as he has. To the children of my deceased daughter POLLY T. GILMOUR, I have paid nine hundred and fifty dollars in addition to three hundred dollars paid their mother as above stated by my son JAMES L. HICKMAN for me (and for which I have given him credit above). I also gave their mother a negro girl named LEAH valued at two hundred and fifty dollars..."
