  2. Title: Andrew Linebarger Parke County, Indiana Biography
Source Text: "LINEBARGER, ANDREW, farmer, Montezuma, whose portrait appears in this work, is one of Parke County's old and respected pioneers. He was born in Lincoln County, NC, June 8, 1815 and is the son of JOHN and MARY LINEBARGER, both of whom are natives of Pennsylvania. They removed to Parke County in 1822 and settled on Section 16, Reserve Township. There they remained but a short time and then entered land in Section 17. They both remained honored and respected residents of Parke County until their deaths, the father died in 1847 and the mother in 1857. The early life of our subject was spent in a comparatively new country, and he had such facilities for obtaining an education as were afforded by the old subscription system of schools at that time. Having been raised on a farm he followed that line of business when he had grown to man's estate and began a business life on his own account. Late in life he became quite extensively interested in stock growing, a business in which he has been very successful, and within the last 10 years he has also dealt extensively in grain. He has for some time been one of the largest stock and grain shippers in the western part of Parke County. Mr. LINEBARGER is, though interested in the stock and grain trade, well known as one of the largest land holders of Reserve Township. Though an active and successful business man, Mr. LINEBARGER has still guven due time and attention to the cause of religion and to the building of the Methodist church, of which he has been a member since he was 14 years old. This was probably due to the early teachings of his parents, who in after years became members of his family and resided with him till their deaths, which occurred as before stated. Though he was a member of a fsamily of 8 children, he is the only one now in resident of Parke County. Mr. LINEBARGER has been twice married: in 1836 to Miss ELIZABETH BURTON, a native of Indiana; she died in 1846. He was married again in 1847, to Miss MARY, daughter of JOEL and SUSANAH WARNER, who were among the early and prominent settlers of Parke County, 1832 being the date of their settlement; his death occurred in 1842 and Mrs. WARNER's in 1868. Mrs. LINEBARGER is still living and has the respect and love of her children and her husband. She is also a consistent member of the Methodist Church. The family of Mr. LINEBARGER by his first wife are: GEORGE H.; MARY A.; WILLIAM S.; DAVID; LEVI J.; and ANDREW J; and by his present wife are: LEWIS C.; JOEL; SAMUEL C.; JACOB; ELIZABETH; IDA B.; LUDA C.; EMMA O.; and LOUISA A. The name of the deceased is JOSEPH H> All of those living are already, or give promise of becoming as they grow to years of maturity, honored and respected citizens of the community. (Beadle, J. H. 1880 History of Parke County, Indiana (from Historic notes on the Wabash Valley and History of Vigo County) Chicago: H. H. Hill & N. Iddings, Publishers reprinted 1977 by the Bookmark, Knightstown, IN).

  3. Title: Andrew Linebarger Obituary
Source Text: "Death of a Patriarch - ANDREW LINEBARGER June 8, 1815 and April 28, 1907 - a period of 91 years, 10 months and 20 days, mark the eartly career of ANDREW LINEBARGER. He was the youngest son of JOHN and MARY LINEBARGER. His brothers were LEWIS, GEORGE, JOHN and his sisters were LOUVINA, NANCY and MARY. These have all been gone several years to the Promised Land. and ANDREW, familiarly called 'Uncle Andy', has gone to be with them, for he has often expressed himself in his church that he would like to see the inside of Heaven. God has taken him there. At the age of five his father and family moved from Lincoln County, North Carolina - his birthplace - to Indiana in 1820, and lived near Indianapolis until 1822, when they came to Parke County. In his 21st year, he was married to ELIZABETH BURTON, and to this union were born five sons and one daughter - George, Mary Ann, William, David, Levi, and Jackson. The wife and mother died in 1846, and two years ago last March, Mary Ann was called by the Angel of Death. In 1847, he married MARY WARNERr, and to this union were born five sons and five daughters - Lewis, Joel, Samuel, Jacob, Joseph, Henry, Elizabeth, Ida, Ludah, Emma and Alice. Jospeh Henry died at the age of five years. In 1890, 'Aunt Polly', the wife and mother entered the Spirit Land. Of the surviving fouteen children, all were present at his death and funeral, with the exception of Ludah, who is ill at her home in Indianapolis. At the age of thirteen he consecrated his life to God and from that time to this, a period of 79 years, he has lived a very devoted and happy Christian life. His father's home was the stopping place of the earliest missionaries of the church, and before a church was built, his house was the house of worship for the community. ANDREW took up his father's work. he has always been a great support to the church and its work. The early circuit riders and, later, pastors have often spoken of the great helpfulness and hospitality of this Chrictian home. The church in which his funeral service was held was built largely through his means and it has always been known as Linebarger Chapel. No call of the church was unheeded by him, and while his physical condition permitted, he was always in attendance at divine worship. No one more thoroughly enjoyed Christian life, and many and many a time the church walls have resounded with his shouts of Hallelujah as the spirit of the Lord filled his soul. While, during the past few years, he has been unable to attend any church service, he always inquired of those who called asking what kind of a meeting they had and how large the attendance was, He was a great lover of children and anxiously watched the progress of the Sabbath School. At different times the children of the Sunday school have stopped and sung sacred songs for him, and they knew no one wouold appreciate it more than he. Father Linebarger was as strong an influence and prominent a figure in community life as in church life. Indeed, we all accord to him the position of central figure in the country about his home. By his integrity and industry he through all the years has won and kept the highest esteem of all he met until his name became a synonym for honesty and rightness. So thoroughly has his work for good been done among his neighbors and friends that time cannot efface the influence of this well-spent life. there is but but one call to one who has lived and died as he - the call to righteous: 'Well done, good and faithful servant; enter through into the joys of the Lord.' Father LINEBARGER is survived by fourteen children, forty-three grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held at the Linebarger Chapel, Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Hobbs, the local pastor, had charge, and was assisted by Rev. A.J. Marshall of Howard, Rev. Z.D. Maris of Rockville, Rev. Parsons of Metcalf, Ill., and Josiah Morris of Coloma. Internment in the home cemetery."
