  1. Title: Jacquelin Mc Laughlin; mclinvil.FTW
Source Text: According to this source, "JOHN LINEBARGER sold out in North Carolina in 1820, and moved with a four horse team to Batholomew County, Indiana. In the spring of 1822, he moved his family again to Reserve Township, Parke County, Indiana where he settled after clearing 160 acres of timberland. Eventually, his holdings were increased to about 400 acres. During his life, he served as Constable and Justice of the Peace. While as a young boy, he insisted on going with the men to fight the British at the Battle of King's Mountain, North Carolina." The LINEBARGERS were Lutherans in North Carolina. After their arrival in Indiana, they became Methodists and were instrumental in establishing the first Methodist Church on land donated by JOHN LINEBARGER in Parke County. This "LINEBARGER CHAPEL" still exists to this day and the LINEBARGER CEMETERY is adjacent to it. The location is near West Union and eight miles north of Rockville, Indiana, the Parke county seat. JOHN LINEBARGER was the first person to be buried in this cemetery which is located near West Union and. eight miles north of Rockville, Indiana." There is documentation by Harriet Del Laughter of a family Bible and Hymn Book that belonged to JOHN and MARY LINEBARGER. According to this source, the Hymn Book was published in 1807 in Germantown, Pennsylvania and John purchased it in 1811. The music was all written by JOHN LINEBARGER and the LINEBARGERS were noted for their musical talent. JULIANA, the mother of ANNA MARIA [MARY] HOOT or HOOTE, and JOHANNES LINEBARGER, the father of JOHN, were brother and sister, making Mary HOOT and JOHN LINEBARGER first cousins as well as husband and wife."

  2. Title: Parke County, Indiana Biographical Portrait 1893
Source Text: According to a Parke County, Indiana Biographical Publication by the Chapman Brothers in 1893, there is a sketch of the LINEBARGER CHAPEL with reference to JOHN and MARY LINEBARGER. The sketch is as follows: " JOHN and MARY LINEBARGER, natives of Pennsylvania came to Parke County in 1822, and settled in the northeast part of Reserve Township. They were Methodists. By 1832, as more immigrants arrived, a small society was organized by Reverend HEZEKIAH SMITH who was succeeded by the Reverend STEPHEN COOPER. A hewed log house was built which served its purpose until another house was built in 1847. JOHN LINEBARGER died in 1847, and MARY in 1857, leaving their son ANDREW to continue the work on the farm and the church. In 1868, the present house was built near the southeast corner of the southwest quarter of section eight. Reverend D. P. MC CLAIN was the pastor in charge. Mr. LINEBARGER's son GEORGE studied for the ministry and often conducted the services of the church and Sunday school. He was born on December 20, 1836 and is still living. The present membership is forty with Rev. A. L. VERMILLON as pastor. The church is on the Montezuma circuit"
