Title: Notes

PLEASE NOTE: Over the years there has been much confusion created by
genealogists and especially by publications like I WALK IN THE LIGHT
"THE ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS OF JOHN SMITH GILMORE" by
Walter & Florence Beanblossom which have interchanged and "blurred"
members of the Gilmore, Gilmour and Gilmer families who arrived in the
American colonies in the early 1700's and who lived in Augusta County,
Virginia during the 1740's:
1. Our GILMOUR family settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania after its
arrival there. It was headed by JAMES GILMOUR Sr. and was living there in
the early 1740's and at least until 1745 when our ancestor JAMES GILMOUR
Jr. was born there in 1745. Shortly afterward, the family then went to
Augusta County, Virginia and remained in Augusta County, Virginia at least
until the death of our JAMES GILMOUR Sr. in 1785. We can prove that
JAMES GILMOUR Jr. went to Lincoln County, Kentucky after the War of the
American Revolution in about 1781 and that he died in Christian County,
Kentucky in 1834.
2.There was another GILMORE family, specifically headed by JAMES
GILMORE who was born in about 1710 in Ulster, Ireland and who married a
MARTHA DENNISON in about 1740 in Pennsylvania. He was not related to
our GILMOURs according to a statements made made by our JAMES
GILMOUR Jr. [born 1745]. JAMES and MARTHA {DENNISON} GILMORE
settled in that portion of Augusta County, Virginia in the early 1740's which
which became known as Rockbridge County after it was formed. Many of
these GILMORE's were victims of the Kerr's Creek Indian Massacres.
3. There was a third GILMORE family, also headed by a JAMES GILMORE
[born between 1712 and 1722 in Ireland] which settled in that portion of
Augusta County, Virginia that became Rockingham County after it was
formed. One of the sons of this JAMES GILMORE was an ALEXANDER
GILMORE who was born in Rockingham County, Virginia in June 1764.
PLEASE NOTE: There are at least two ALEXANDER's with the last name of
GILMORE or GILMOUR who were born in Virginia within ten years of one
another. One of these ALEXANDER's married a REBECCA SMITH in Lincoln
County, Kentucky, but I don't know which one.
PLEASE NOTE: Our ALEXANDER GILMOUR was born in about 1752 in
Augusta County, Virginia according to OTTIE MINERVA GREINER who was
a member of the DAR and who did extensive research on our GILMOUR
family during the early part of the twentieth century. His birth took place
just after his parents had moved there from Lancaster County in the
colony of Pennsylvania. He is cited as the son of our JAMES GILMOUR Sr.
along with his older brother, our JAMES GILMOUR [born 1745 in Lancaster
County, Pennsylvania] in the Will of their father, JAMES GILMOUR Sr. This
Will was recorded following JAMES GILMOUR Sr.'s death in Staunton,
Augusta County, Virginia on 20 September 1785. We think that this
ALEXANDER GILMOUR followed his brother, JAMES GILMOUR [born 1745]
to Lincoln County, Kentucky, but have no proof. We have no information
about this ALEXANDER GILMOUR's death date or whether or not he
married. He may, or may not have been the ALEXANDER GILMORE who
married a Rebecca Smith in Lincoln County, Kentucky on 10 October 1791.
There is a Lincoln County, Kentucky marriage entry on that date for an
ALEXANDER GILMORE and REBECCA SMITH and I have seen an original
of this marriage bond when visiting Stanford, Lincoln County, Kentucky
many years ago. However, there is no way to prove who this ALEXANDER
GILMORE was and if he was our ALEXANDER GILMOUR.
PLEASE NOTE: There is another ALEXANDER GILMORE who was as far as
can be determined from the Rockingham GILMORES who is reported to
have been born in Rockingham County, Virginia in June 1764. He WAS NOT
related to our ALEXANDER GILMOUR [born 1752]. This ALEXANDER
GILMORE [born 1764] is reported, by some, to have been married twice:
first to an Esther Magill in Virginia and second to a Rebecca Smith in
Lincoln County, Kentucky in on 20 October 1789. I did not find a bond for
this date when I visited Lincoln County, but did find one for 1791. There is
also no way to prove who whether or not it was this ALEXANDER
GILMORE [ as opposed to our ALEXANDER GILMOUR] who married
REBECCA SMITH.
