Source Text: In his Last Will and Testament of 21 March 1849, JOEL HICKMAN made the following references to his daughter POLLY T. HICKMAN GILMOUR and her descendants:
"In the name of God Amen, I, JOEL HICKMAN of the county of Clarke & State of Kentucky: being of sound mind & disposing memory do make ordain and publish this as my last Will and Testament in manner and following to wit, I will and direct that my just debts & funeral expenses be paid, I give and bequeath to the children of my deceased son JOHN W. HICKMAN jointly (to be equally divided among them) the sum of Eight hundred dollars; my son JOHN W. HICKMAN, their father having received in his lifetime seven hundred dollars. My son JAMES L. HICKMAN has already received more than his proportionate part of my estate advanced to him at sundry times under pressing solicitations to relieve his embarrasments vs) Five hundred dollars to pay a Bank debt for him (out of money received from Allens for land sold for that purpose;) also a negro woman named Lucy worth four hundred dollars ; also eighteen hundred & forth four dollars & twenty six cents - making in all Twenty seven hundred & forty four dollars & twenty six cents; but three hundred dollars of the above was paid him on account of that sum advanced by him to my daughter POLLY T. GILLMOUR [sic] with which he is to be credited, leaving Twenty four hundred and forty four dollars & twenty six cents as the amount of the account which stands charged against him - six hundred dollars of which is included in the note dated on the 13th day of December 1839, and it is my will that he receive no more from my estate until my other children may have received as much as he has, and if my estate should not be adequate to pay my other children as much, I direct that the said note of six hundred dollars due from my son JAMES L. HICKMAN be collected & distributed equally among my other children; he is to receive his proportionate part of the same only if my others may have received as much as he has. To the children of my deceased daughter POLLY T. GILMOUR I have paid nine hundred & fifty dollars in addition to the three hundred dollars paid their mother as above stated by my son JAMES L. HICKMAN for me (and for which I have given him credit above. I also give their mother a negro girl named LEAH valued at two hundred and fifty dollars..."
