  1. Title: Oroville [WA] Gazette April 1919
    Text From Source:
Source Text: OBITUARY: "Saturday afternoon, JAMES A. GILMOUR, father of GUY GILMOUR died at the Oroville General Hospital after a long illness. and in his death passed away one of those old pioneers of the West., the ranks of which have been so depleted by the ravage of time that few are left to tell of the days of 49. The deceased was born in Missouri in 1843, and hence had reached his 76th year. When an infant his family moved to Illinois and in 1849, his parents crossed the plains in an ox driven prairie schooner. The deceased spent 70 years in Oregon and Washington. He was a blacksmith by trade, but like most all men who came west he took up the mining game and followed it until age incapacitated him from active work. He came to Okanogan county in very early days and was at Ruby when that camp was in the zenith of its prosperity. At the time of his death he still owned mining claims near Keller which he long dreamed would make him rich. During his residence in Okanogan county he made many friends among the old timers."

Source Text: In the summer of 1880, JAMES ALEXANDER GILMOUR and his brother, JOHN THOMAS GILMOUR decided to move their families from Oregon to the central area of the Washington Territory. They were weary of the seemingly endless rain and fog in the Willamette River Valley of Oregon. They had heard reports that there was a new community which had a dry climate and plenty of sunshine in the Yakima River on the eastern slope of the Cascade Mountains, and that appealed to them. In October 1880 they packed their belongings in covered wagons and made the trip from Oregon to Ellensburg in what is now Kittitas County, Washington. Ellensburg was fast becoming a transportation hub for freight traffic from Seattle to points east and was in need of a good blacksmith shop. JAMES and his brother, JOHN GILMOUR formed a partnership as blacksmiths and set up shop to fill this need.
