- Title: Ron Stephens 15 July 2005
Source Text: Not very much is known about Mary Jane Gilmour. She is not listed with the family of John W. and Jane Gilmour in the 1850 Census in Hancock County, Illinois. In the 1840 Census for Hancock County, Illinois for the family of John Gilmour, there is only one daughter under 10 listed and that is probably Mary's sister Lucy E. Gilmour. It is not known whether Mary Jane Gilmour died at an early age or if she might have been unintentionally left out of the 1840 census; she was old enough to have been married at the time of the 1850 Census. Although her name is included in the "Oregon Pioneers" site among family members who made the overland trip by covered wagon to Oregon in 1851, it is doubtful that she made that trip. There is a Mary Jane [whose maiden name was Gilmore/Gilmour] Clymer who married John Vance Clymer in Des Moines, Iowa on 3 November 1849, but in the 1860 [Clay County, IA] and 1870 [Henry County, IA her place and date of birth date are cited as Indiana and about 1830/1. So this was not our Mary Jane Gilmour who was the daughter of John Wilson Gilmour and Jane Alexander [Bronaugh] Gilmour and born in 1834 following her parents marriage in 1833 in Christian County, KY and who moved to Illinois a few days after their marriage.
