- Title: Oregon Portrait and Biographical Record of the Willamette Valley 1903
Publisher: 1903
Source Text: This biography of JOHN WILSON GILMOUR was published about 1900, when he was living in Silverton Marion County, Oregon and written after his spouse JANE ALEXANDER [BRONAUGH] GILMOUR had passed away. According to this article, "Mr. GILMOUR's wife was a daughter of TALIAFERRO BRONAUGH and JANE GILMORE BRONAUGH, representative of old families of Kentucky." It also states that "Mrs. GILMOUR passed away Dec 9, 1885."
The biography also states that on "August 29, 1833, JOHN W. GILMOUR married JANE ALEXANDER BRONAUGH and two months later settled in Hancock County, Ill. In 1851, he started across the plains for Oregon with his wife and eight children. Six months later the family arrived in what is now Washington County, locating temporarily near Hillsboro. The following year they removed to Linn county, where Mr. GILMOUR followed his trade of blacksmith and, incidentally engaged in farming..."

- Title: Ron Stephens re: Jane Alexander Bronaugh 9 June 2005
Source Text: Although GILMOUR family documents including at least two published biographies in the Pacific Northwest [one in Oregon of JOHN WILSON GILMOUR and another in Central Washington state of JOHN THOMAS GILMOUR [son of JOHN WILSON and JANE ALEXANDER [BRONAUGH] GILMOUR] clearly state that JANE ALEXANDER GILMOUR's father was TALIAFERRO BRONAUGH of Kentucky, it's not known why JANE ALEXANDER BRONAUGH was not listed in the will of her father, TALIAFERRO BRONAUGH. There are several possible reasons including the following:
1. JANE ALEXANDER BRONAUGH may have eloped with JOHN WILSON GILMOUR without her father [TALIAFERRO BRONAUGH's] permission and he disowned her at that time. They most probably lost permanent contact with one another following the departure from Christian County, Kentucky of JOHN WILSON and JANE ALEXANDER GILMOUR for Illinois immediately following their marriage.
2. TALIAFERRO BRONAUGH may have decided that his daughter JANE ALEXANDER and her husband JOHN WILSON GILMOUR were self-sufficient and didn't need his property or money, knowing of course that she would never return to Kentucky.
3. JANE ALEXANDER BRONAUGH disagreed with her father, TALIAFERRO BRONAUGH who owned over 500 slaves, over the slavery issue and this disagreement , along with her moving to Illinois, a "free state", may have resulted in a permanent 'falling out" between her and her father. JANE and her husband, JOHN WILSON GILMOUR owned no slaves and they worked hard for what they had. Taliaferro had many slaves to work his tobacco plantations in Lincoln and Christian County, Kentucky. At least one other sibling had a dislike for slavery. According to William E. Connelley, in his biography of Taliaferro's son and older brother of JANE, THOMAS CLAYTON BRONAUGH "was born near Hopkinsville in 1805. He grew up and married there and he left Kentucky and removed to Illinois, IN ORDER TO GET AWAY FROM THE INSTITUTION OF SLAVERY, WHICH HE THOROUGHLY DISLIKED".
According to BRONAUGH Genealogist, Steven Wright, THOMAS CLAYTON BRONAUGH recorded the names of the children of TALIAFERRO BRONAUGH, in a family bible sometime after he departed Kentucky. It isn't known why JANE wasn't listed among them, but it been a result of her having been disowned by their father TALIAFERRO BRONAUGH and TALIAFERRO may have severed her ties with all members of the BRONAUGH family. It is also possible that JANE ALEXANDER BRONAUGH and her older brother, THOMAS CLAYTON BRONAUGH didn't get along personally. THOMAS CLAYTON BRONAUGH wasn't listed in his father's Will either.
4. There is also a remote possibility that JANE ALEXANDER GILMOUR's mother, JENNIE GILMOUR, may have been directly related to JOHN WILSON GILMOUR and his family. This would have made JANE ALEXANDER and her husband, JOHN WILSON GILMOUR cousins and this may have been unacceptable to Taliaferro BRONAUGH. From about 1800 up until at least 1830, TALIAFERRO BRONAUGH and the GILMOUR family had had a close relationship. JOHN WILSON GILMOUR's grandfather JAMES GILMOUR had sold much of his land to TALIAFERRO BRONAUGH when both families were living in Lincoln County. Both families moved to Christian County, Kentucky about the same time and both TALIAFERRO BRONAUGH and JAMES GILMOUR were instrumental in founding the Sinking Springs Presbyterian Church near Hopkinsville. The TALIAFERRO BRONAUGH and James GILMOUR families [which included JOHN WILSON GILMOUR] lived on adjacent farm plots at the time of the 1830 U.S. Census.
