    Text: Joel Downs was born in Sandersfield, Berkshire County, Mass in 1772. He married in New York Lois Mansfield and came to Ohio in the fall of 1816. He settled in Southington, Trumbull County, where h
    e resided a short time, also in Howland, coming to Warren in 1818. He lived in Warren in the south part of the town until 1835 when he removed to the place on Parkman road known as Hard-scrabble, and cleared up a place there. He raised a family of seven children of whom three sons survive. He died in the fall of 1862, his wife surviving him some nine years and dying aged about seventy seven. Mr. Downs was a soldier in the War of 1812."

    State of Ohio, Trumbull County, ss.

    On this 17th day of May A.D. 1859, personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace within and for the county and state aforesaid, Joel Downs, age 77 years, a resident of Warren Township in the sa id county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Joel Downs who was a private in a company of New York Militia commanded by Capt Jehial Dayton in a Regiment commanded by Col. Pliney Adams in the War with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812. That he volunteered at Granville Washington County New York on or about the 23rd day of April 1813, and remained in readiness for service from that day till about the 1st day of September following, when he was ordered into the service by general orders from the Governor of the State of New York, for the defences of Plattsburgh, he marched from Granvill to Burlington in the State of Vermont and from Burlington to Whitehall, NY where he was discharged with the rest of Capt Dayton’ Company, a few days after the battle of Plattsburgh in September 1813.[*] that he received no written discharge, but was honorably discharge at Whitehall as aforesaid for which he has received from the United States his land warrant for 160 acres of land, which warrant he has sold to one Samuel Downs, and cannot now have reference to the same to give its date or number, but he annexes to this application the original notice of the Pension Office that declarants application was received at said Office on the 11th day of April 1855, and was number 62,042. and, that he has not received any portion of the sum directed to be paid him by the Act entitled “An act for the relief of certain Volunteers and Militia called into service for the defence of the frontiers of the State of New York and for other purposes, passed April 21st 1818, and the Act of 9th April 1819.
