Obituary: Dunedin Evening Star 3 Nov 1965 Mr James Robertson Copland, who died yesterday, was a former Mayor of Balclutha, and had a long record of service to community organisations. He was 86. He was Mayor of Balclutha from 1941 to 1944 and had previously served as councillor. He was the borough's first assessor when the Lower Clutha River Trust was established in 1940 and subsequently served as a member for a number of years. He followed the late Mr S Waite as South Otago representative on the South Otago Hospital Board in 1940 resigning four years later. His term of membership of the Otago Electric Power Board extended from May 1940 until October 1953 and he was chairman in 1948. South Otago High School Board of Governors was an earlier interest and later in life, having been a Justice of the Peace for a number of years, he was a foundation member when the South Otago Justices Association was formed in 1953. For about 10 years he was District Coroner. Mr Copland joined the National Mortgage and Agency Company at Waimate in 1906, resigned after a short time to begin farming, and rejoined in 1911 remaining as Balclutha manager until his retirement in 1939. He was chairman of South Otago Transport Ltd, from 1940 until his death. He is survived by his wife, two sons and four daughters. References: NatLib NZBios. 1965 V2 P136.
