Individual:
Douglas was born and raised in the Waimate area and attended the Waimate High School. He hit fame. He studied Economics, gaining MA with first-class honours in Economics in 1915, then moved to Tasmania, where he was Professor of Economics from 1920-24. He was Sydney Myer Professor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne from 1924-44. In the war years he served as Economic consultant to the Curtin Government and was asked by the Menzies Government to take on the contentious task of Australian Prices Commissioner. He was Australian Minister to China in 1945, was first Vice-Chancellor of Australian National University 1948-53, and was High Commissioner to Canada 1953-56. He was made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) in 1933 and was knighted Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE) in 1950. Buildings on the campus of the Australian National University in Canberra are named after him.
