Individual:
Alexander emigrated to New Zealand in 1865, arriving in Lyttelton aboard the TUDOR. He worked in Christchurch and then for Gould and Miles on their Selwyn farm. Then he went to Bangor and worked for Hamilton Ward and then to Cheviot for 9 months. In 1869 he went in for ploughing on Pareora Station which he carried on for 12 years.
During this time he bought blocks of land, improved them and sold them again. In this way he bought land at Hook, and then Howburn farm near Bluecliffs. He lived there for two years and was married during that time.
At his marriage, Alexander was a bachelor, farmer, and Annie was a spinster. Their witnesses were John Loudon, a farmer of Otaio, and Elizabeth Cochrane Granger of Waimate.
In 1878 he bought in conjunction with Turnbull, Godley and Toswill (presumably the mortgagees) a farm of 376 acres at St. Andrews. He became the sole owner and sold it to the Government in 1895. In 1880 he bought Brookfield farm, Esk Valley, of 355 acres and increased it to 650 acres. He also had 100 acres of the Makikihi Swamp, which he drained with Government assistance. He and Annie settled at Brookfield. He was a member of the Upper Otaio School Committee, also of the Wainono
Drainage Board, and was a director of the St. Andrews Saleyards Company.
After his retirement he lived at "Rosslyn", then at Wai-iti Road, in Timaru.
He was a staunch member of the Presbyterian Church, and after removing to town was a regular worshipper at Chalmers Church until he transferred to the Highfield district.
