"R.C. Glosenger, in his lifetime a well known general merchant of Hemlo lck
Hollow, was throughout the greater part of his active business life
identified with the agricultural and commercial interests of Wayne Coun ty.
Of excellent business abilities anad broad resources, he attained a
prominent place among the substantial citizens of his part in the count y.
He won success by his well directed, energetic efforts, and the prosper ity
that came to him was certainly deserved.
A native of Wayne county, Mr. Glosenger was born in Salem Township, Mar ch
21, 1824, a son of John and Mary (Brown) Glosenger, the former a native o f
Connecticut, who in his twentieth year came to Wayne County and took up
residence in Salem Township. In their family were the following childre n:

On attaining his majority, R. C. Glosenger left home and began the stru ggle
of life for himself as a carpenter. He was married November 19, 1843, t o
Miss Mary Tisdale, of Salem Township, and they became the parents of ni ne
children, whose names and dates of birth are as follows:

Irene is now the wife of Joseph Moore of McKean County, Penn
Anna B. is the wife of John Hilts, a merchant of Dover, N.J., by whom s he
has two children, Carl Glosenger and Russel.
Soon after his marriage, our Subject purchased a farm in Salem Township ,
which he successfully operated for fifteen years. By the government he w as
appointed provost marshall in 1861, under Col. Ewell, and acceptably se rved
in that capacity until the close of the war. He then purchased another
farm, which he conducted for three years, but believing other business w ould
be more profitable, he removed to Hemlock Hollow, where he opened both a
hotel and a general store. In 1875, however, he again became a farmer, b ut
at the end of two years, he removed to Scranton, Penn., where for the s ame
length of time he was proprietor of the "White Horse Hotel." Returning t o
his native county, he resumed agricultural pursiuts, which he continued t o
follow until the death of his wife, which occurred September 29, 1881. T wo
years later he sold his property and returned to Hemlock Hollow where h e was
successfully engaged in merchandising, enjoying a liberal patronage.
For his second wife, Mr. Glosenger married Miss Christine Pelton of
Lackawaxen Township, Pike county, a daughter of James L. and Almeda (Ha rvey)
Pelton, and one child blessed the union, Ethel Almeda, born March 20, 1 886.
Mr. Pelton was a native of New York City, and at the age of ten years m oved
to Pike County, Penn., eight years later becoming a resident of the cit y of
Lackawaxen, where he engaged in the hotel business for some time. After
selling his property he was employed by the Delaware and Hudson Canal C o.,
for eight years, and for the remained of his life, engaged in farming. H e
died October 21, 1882, and his beloved wife passed away May 21, 1884,
honored and respected by all who knew them.
In politics, Mr. Glosenger was always a staunch Democrat, and ever took a n
active interest in public affairs. He most acceptable served as collec tor
for Salem Township for two years, and for many years was one of the sch ool
directors in paupack Township. He was a member of the Salem Branch of O dd
Fellows for over forty years. To the day of his death, he stood a stro ng
man, strong to plan and to perform, strong in his credit and good name a nd a
worth example for the rising generation."
Note: The 1850 census index of Salem, Wayne county, PA lists Robert as " Glossinger" because the census taker's penmanship makes the "e" look like an "i". The 1860 census lists Robert as "Glosenger". His will follows and lists three different spellings.
In the August 17th, 1899 newspaper, The Honesdale Citizen, there is a s hort "obituary" as follows:

Glossenger died in the twp. of Paupack in said county on the 13 day of August 1899 at 6 o'clock A. M. That the family or principal residence and the principal part of the estate of the said deceased were at the time of his death within the said county of Wayne. That the said deceased on the 15 day of Feby 1894 in presence of Royal J. Kimble and D. G. Purdy made and published his last will and testament which is hereinth exhibited and your petitioner pray that the same may be admitted to probate and letters testamentary issued to Christeen Glossenger named therein as executrix.

Last Will and Testament

Robert C. Glossinger
I, Robert C. Glossenger of the Township of Paupack in the County of Way ne and State of Pennsylvania being of sound and disposing mind, memory, and understanding do make, publish, and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say as to my worldly estate and all property real, personal, and mixed of what nature or kind soever and wheresoever the same shall be of which I shall die seized and possessed or to which I shall be entitled at the time of my decease. I give, devise, bequeath, and dispose thereof in the manner following to wit: First my will is that all my just debts and funeral expenses shall by
my executrix hereinafter named be fully paid and satisfied out of my es tate as soon after my decease as shall by her be found convenient. Item - as touching all the rest and residue of my estate and property I give, devise, and bequeath the same unto my beloved wife Christeen Glossenger to have and to hold the same during her natural life provided however that she does not again marry. Item[ -] I give devise and bequeath unto my youngest daughter Ethel Glossenger the reversion or remainder of the said property herein devised to my said wife Christeen Glossenger (during her natural life provided however she does not again marry) from and after the decease or marriage of my said beloved wife to have and to hold the same to her my said daughter Ethel Glossenger. Item[ -] I do hereby nominate, constitute, and appoint my said beloved wife Christeen Glossenger Executrix of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I Robert C.
