Notes
Individual:
James was most likely born in Ireland but could have been born after the family moved to America. An enlistment paper for a James Kennedy in the Augusta County militia matches the age for James and I believe it to be him. The paper states James Kennedy enlisted in 1856 at the age of 21 and was born in Ireland. This matches the approximate date for him that we have concluded from his tombstone which states he died in his 90th year.James is buried in the Manse Cemetery, also known as the Paint Lick Cemetery. Tombstone inscription reads: "In Memory of James Kennedy who died Oct 1, 1825 in his 90 year."James Thompson, first surveyor for Lincoln Co., KY, appoint
ed in Jan. 1781, appointed and qualified at the same time, five deputy surveyors. He continued to add many deputies over the months and in Jan. 1783 added James Kennedy and Hugh Ross and five others. The white male over 16 that year is most likely Francis Her
ron if he still at home. He would have been around the age 18-20 that year. It could also be William. His tombstone lists that he was born in 1788 but I believe it could have been a few years earlier in about 1783. That would have made him 16 in 1799. If it is William then Francis Herron would have moved out and would have his own listing. Thomas would have been 21 that year and apparently is not living in the home either. Listings have been located so far for James Jr. and John, but Francis and Thomas cannot be accounted for.The white male over 16 that year is most likely Francis Her

As in 1799, listings have been located for James Jr. and John, but not for Thomas and Francis Herron yet.I am not sure of who the white male 16 and over is for thi
s year. Thomas is not married yet, but would be well over 21 at this time. All the older males are accounted for through Robert, who would have been about 15 that year according to cemetery records. The white male over 16 in the household is most likely Robe
rt this year who would have been 16 that year or 17 if he was the male over 16 referred to in 1801.The white male above 16 he is taxed for this year is most d
efinitely Robert - sources of his birth year would definitely determine it to be him.The listings do not show James Jr. or James Sr. this year
. Based on land entries for the previous years, I am entering them with the amount of land that they had. Also James Jr. is shown in previous years with blacks in his household and James Sr. is not. This shows James Jr. having a male of age 16 and over in his household this year. Since James Sr. does not show a male of 16 years and above, it can be assumed that Robert has gone to live with his brother. David Kennedy is the next oldest son in James Sr.'s household and he would have been about 14 in 1804.The listings do not show James Jr. or James Sr. this year

The 1805 tax list makes us question if Robert is the 16 and older male living with James Jr. Robert has his own listing that year. He and Elizabeth King married in March and have set up their own home. David Kennedy is the next oldest son in James Sr.'s household and he would have been about 15 in 1805.James Kennedy's household contains 2 males under 10 years o

Purshasers at the estate sale were Elizabeth Kennedy, Thomas Kennedy, John King, Henry Pickelshimor, Melclue Shumate (assuming this is Mitchell), and George Denny who bought personal property. One house is referred to as the mansion house is purchased by Elizabeth Kennedy. A house referred to as the A. Kennedy house is bought by A. Kennedy (assuming Andrew A. Kennedy). The orchard and north west field are bought by Elizabeth Kennedy. The south east field is bought by A. Kennedy. David Kennedy purchased the north west field. Starling Willis purchases the barn field, barn and garden. Invnetory was made by G. Denny, Thos. Kennedy, Mitchell Shumate and John Coatney on 20 Oct 1825. Franklin McClary, Joseph Kennedy and John King offer assurance in the form of $200 current money on the verification of the estate sale. This oath made 17 Oct 1825.In the early records of Augusta County, Virginia there are several mentions of a James Kennedy that fits our James' age. One of the mentions for him is a military record for the Augusta Militia. The record shows James Kennedy enlisting in the Augusta Militia in 1756 at the age 21. He states he was born in Ireland. At the time of this muster, he is not found with his company. This same James Kennedy is shown witnessing many deeds made by his father Capt. Joseph Kennedy. He later is mentioned in several deeds of his own and is mentioned several times in service in the Militia particularly along side his brother, William Kennedy, father of Robert Campbell Kennedy the Revolutionary Soldier who fought with Thomas Kennedy and his brothers at the Battle of King's Mountain.

James Kennedy was an early surveyor of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Many believe that he was possibly the Mecklenburg merchant who made a covenent-deed with Thomas Polk on 9 July 1786. A James Kennedy is also listed as being a Deputy in Mecklenburg County in 1780. I believe that the surveyor James and maybe even the Deputy James are probably him. It is very unlikely that he is the merchant James Kennedy who made the covenant deed with Thomas Polk. We know that James was already in Kentucky before this as he was made deputy surveyor in 1783. The merchant James of Mecklenburg also shows up in Mecklenburg records as late as 1788 when our James was already in Kentucky.

He is named on the Tax List of Lincoln County in 1790.

From Volume 3, Order Book # 4 for Lincoln County, of Court and Quarter Sessions. 17 April 1792, page 136. An Acknowledgment from Isaac Shelby and William Warren, Trustees for Martha Miller, to William Miller, was proved by James Kennedy, a witness thereto, and recorded.

He is named on the Tax List of Garrard County in 1800.

He is listed on the Garrard County census in 1810. James Kennedy's household contains 2 males under 10 years old; 1 male age 10-15; 2 males age 16-25; 1 male age 45 and over; 1 female age 10-15; and 1 female age 26 thru 44.

He is listed on the Garrard County census in 1820. James Kennedy's household, 1 male under ten years; 1 male ten and under sixteen; 1 male age 16 and under 26; 1 male 45 and older; 1 female under 10 years of age; and 1 female 45 and older; 1 person engaged in agriculture.

He died 1 Oct 1825 and his estate was probated that month in Garrard County. Copy of Sale Bill from Estate Sale, dated 10/29/1825 shows Franklin McClary as executor of James Kennedy's estate. Garrard County, KY; Circuit Court, March term 1826, filed and adopted June term, 1826. Case #602, Box 21, Bundle 82, Petition filed in Chancery Court for Partition of Land To the Judge of the Garrard County Court of Chancery, letting your orater, John King and oratrix, Elizabeth King, state to your Honor that on the 1st day of October 1825, James Kennedy, late of Garrard County died intestate leaving very little estate except a poor tract of land in said County containing about 150 acres and worth not more than $800, and having a widow Betty Kennedy-and the following children, his heirs, to wit: your oratrix, who is the wife of your orator; John Kennedy, James Kennedy, Molly Ross, widow of Hugh Ross, dec'd; Hannah Patterson, the wife of Thomas Patterson, the unknown Heirs of Frances (sp) Kennedy, dec'd; William Kennedy; Robert Kennedy; David Kennedy; Andrew Kennedy; Samuel Kennedy; Thomas Kennedy and Joseph Kennedy. Some the Heirs of said Francis, dec'd, if not all, are infants, but their names are unknown to your petitioner. Said Heirs are non residents. Said tract of land is incumbered with dower and would not be well divided, and if divided, each share would not be worth scarcely anything--the value of the land converted to money would be much better for the Heirs than the land itself, besides each distribution is not worth as much as $100 or near it. Wherefore your petitioners pray that all children of named Heirs as well as the Husbands and said widow, be made dependants, hereto, and such proceedings be directed, as shall be necessary to obtain a decree--and that you will decree the Sale of said land on such terms as may be proper and distribute the proceeds between those entitled and make a decree in relation to the dower as may be right. Signed, John King, Elizabeth King October 14, 1825. I do Certify to the Garrard County Court that I wave my Right Administration on the estate of my deceast husband, James Kennedy. Given under my hand this date above. Attest: Jas G Woods Signed: Betsy Kennedy

Heirs of James Kennedy to Andrew A. Kennedy: This indenture of bargain and sale made and entered into this 22 day of June 1829 by and between all the heirs of James Kennedy deceased by their Commissioner, William Jennings of the one part and Andrew A Kennedy of the other part. Witnesseth that whereas the said James Kennedy dec'd died intestate leaving as a part of his estate a tract of land lying in the County of Garrard on the waters of Paint Lick Creek and containing one hundred thirty four and a half acres and whereas said heirs are numerous and the land but a small tract would be of little value were it equally divided among them all. Wherefore there was a bill filed by one of said Heirs praying a decree to Sell at the Sept term 1826, a derectal order was entered up to sell and S G Tillet was appointed commissioner to execute Said decree and upon the 17th day of Oct 1826 he sold said Tract of land for the price of $810.00 and said Andrew A Kennedy became the purchaser, and at the June term, 1829, William Jennings was appointed by said court to make conveyance to said purchaser. Barb, I am sending you bits and pieces of copies I have had for some time. One copy is apparently from a letter written by a Lee Kennedy Biles, 9600 East Bexhill Dr., Kensington, MD 20795. The letter is not dated and I think that some of the pages are missing. It is to a Ruth?My copy is poor and would not recopy very well, so I'll attempt to retype pertinent data re: James Kennedy. James Kennedy born 1735, died 1Oct1825 was James Sr., brother of John Sr. (1730-1813) and Dr. Joseph Kennedy (1st resident physician of Mecklenberg Co., North Carolina. He was married twice: Elizabeth McClary McCreary/McQuerry), mother of his 1st children: James Jr., John, Mary Ross, Hannah Patterson, and William. His last wife, Elizabeth was mother of Andrew, Robert, Elizabeth King. I am not sure where the division is as I do not know when the first wife died or he married the second. He is my gggg grandfather. On another page he continues: Note: I didn't name all of the children: There were the Baptist Preacher and stone mason Samuel Kennedy who married Rebecca Pickleshimer; Robert Kennedy who married Betsy King; Elizabeth Kennedy who married John King; Andrew A. Kennedy married Mary Bates; David (Wells-David) Kennedy married Peggy Faulkner; Joseph Kennedy married Sally Nicholson; Francis Kennedy married Mary Brooks; Thomas Kennedy married Polly Young; William Kennedy married Dolly Thompson; James Kennedy married Mary Denny, and are my family; Mary Kennedy married Hugh Ross; Hannah Kennedy married Thomas Patterson; and John Kennedy married Barbary Gordon. James, Wm., David had only one wife. Some of the others may have married others also. He continues, and I am making an assumption that Lee is masculine, with his descent from the Denny Family which includes the marriage of Mary Denny to James Kennedy, Jr. Mary b. 2Feb1783 and died 25 Jan 1864 in Marshall Co., TN, married James 16Feb1796 in Madison Co., KY (I'm sure that this part of Madison Co. became Garrard Co. The next year) James was b. 1777 in NC and d. 20Oct1837 in Marshall Co., TN. I am giving dates where I find them: Andrew A. Kennedy (20Nov1793-28Jun1863), Mary Bates (8Oct1792-29Nov1867). There is more data on some descendants of some of the children of James,Sr., but I will have to sort them out. I'll try to make that another mailing. As to the b. and d. dates for James,Sr., this is how listed in the Paint Lick Cem., Garrard Co., KY. (Age 90 1OCT1825) Gerald Tudor

(posted at The Kennedy & Young Information Pages by Mona Winder Kennedy)(Research):In my search for my ancestors, for many years as far back as we could get in our research was to John Kennedy here in Maury County. We knew John came here early and from census records that he was born in North Carolina and that many of his children were born in Kentucky. This gave us a place to look but not sure which years he remained in both places. With the advent of the Internet, I was finally able to find that John Kennedy was most likely the John Kennedy who married Barbara Gordon in Madison County, Kentucky and was most likely the son of James Kennedy who lived in Paint Lick in nearby Garrard County. With more research and the assistance of others I was finally able to confirm this by finding his brothers also came to Maury County with him. Also the naming patterns of John's children matched up with the names of his brothers and sisters. Then with the aid of an interview done with David Newton Kennedy, I was finally able to place the family in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, making that the most likely place for John and the other children to have been born.

As to where James was before he came to North Carolina, I am still searching. I am still trying to confirm whether his parents are truly Capt. Joseph Kennedy and Elizabeth Edmondson of Augusta County, Virginia. I first ran across this evidence while doing research at the local Family History Library at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Columbia, Tennessee. This theory was put forth by Philip G. West, descendant of Thomas C. Kennedy. So far there is a great deal of circumstantial evidence that supports this theory but nothing concrete has been found. The theory has further been substantiated by Dr. Curtis Kennedy with The David Kennedy Society who has done research in Scotland, Ireland, Virginia, North Carolina, and Kentucky. Dr. Kennedy's research also supports the theory made by Lee Kennedy Biles that James Kennedy is the brother of John Kennedy and Dr. Joseph Kennedy. I am still looking for the concrete evidence to tie all of this together. The marriage date is a conclusion based on the approximate age given by Lee Kennedy Biles for the oldest child of James. The location is based on the research of Joy Herron as to when the Herrons arrived in North Carolina and the fact that James was most likely already there too.

Glen's father was Franklin Peter Kennedy (1852-1933) and his mother was Martha Jane Armstrong. Franklin P. Kennedy's father was Robert Franklin Kennedy (1815-1868)and the mother was Julia Bullock. It is my understanding that Robert F. Kennedy's father was Robert Kennedy (1788-11/16/1855), mother was Elizabeth King. Then, my family records show that the father of my Robert (1788-1855, dying in Kokomo, IN) was James Kennedy (1735 - 10/1/1825), but I have only the mothers name as Elizabeth--last name unknown. Based on what I have shared with you here, does my ancestry fit into the James KENNEDY discussed in this forum? And thus into Rick Gray's ancestry? For simplicity I have left off brother's and sister's names, but I have the children of James KENNEDY being, in order of oldest, Mary, Thomas C., my Robert, David, Andrew A., Samuel, and Joseph. If so, I would like to know the mother's name of Robert Kennedy, son of James? Also, am I safe in adding Joseph Kennedy, father of James to my tree? If it is, then I would like to know, too, if anyone has an ancestry of Joseph, the American patriarch, that goes back to Ulster and beyond (Is this discussed at all in Billy Kennedy's books?)? Rick, if your family history includes Robert Franklin Kennedy, who died in Kokomo, IN in 1868, then I have a wonderful 1868 Kokomo newspaper account of his death that I found on microfilm.
