Individual:
Note: Augustus, Eleazer and Oliver sold land that was deeded toWilliam Clifton. Huxford also came from England in 1697.Resided in Albermarle Sound NC late 1600 Plantation Owner.Albermarle Sound was considered part of VA in the late 1600's,then became Chowan Co., NC and then Bertie Co. NC in 1722. JohnCoward (Cowart) was born in Wells, Somerset, England about1690,a son of Sir William Coward. He came over to America with hisfather. The elder Coward granted a large tract of land in theAlbermarle Sound area of North Carolina but which, in the latter1600's, was considered a part of the colony of Virginia. Theproperty became a part of Chowan County, then in 1722, in BertieCounty when it was formed out of Chowan. The large plantationthere was operated by Sir William Cowart unti lhis death April5, 1705. John Coward, the subject , was about seven years oldwhen the
family emigrated from England . He married Elizabeth Wimberlyand to them were born four children: William, John, Edward, andBenjamin. John Coward's will written in 1738, was filed forprobate in Chowan County, May. 28, 1737, and was probated theAugust term of court, 1737. He bequeathed his plantation to "mysons, William and John", subject to his wife's use for herlifetime, and gave the remainder of the estate to his wifeElizabeth, son, Edward and the child his wife was then pregnant. The child was named Benjamin. Most of the Coward/Cowartdescendants in Georgia are descended from the above John andElizabeth Wimberly Coward. The son William, moved to SouthCarolina and was living in Cheraw District in 1790 census;later, or by 1894, he had moved to Effingham Co., GA and died inTattnall County, GA. He married in 1812 at the age of 92years. None of the other three sons of John and Elizabeth movedto Georgia, however, four grandsons (sons of Edward), moved toEffingham County as early as 1789:Zachariah, Nathaniel, James R. and Henry Coward (orCowart). Thespelling of the family name to Cowart seemed to begin with theseafter moving to Georgia.
Mrs. Elizabeth Coward; the wife of the subject, was living in1751 when she witnessed a deed in Bertie Co., North Carolina. No later mention of her in public records has been found.
