Individual:
Note: Principal facts of this brief history, as related to thegenealogical part, are derived from memorands collected by myUncle, Jackson Cowart, in early part this year. He receivedmaterials assistance from my grandfather William Carter, died 31Oct 1883. All incidents narrated I added are mearly names anddates. The HX derived from my Uncle's notes refer only to thosepersons who flourished & d before the writer's recollectionbegins. Signed, Mrs C.E. Anthony. Early Cowart HX setforth inthe publication, "HX Our Cowart Family" Cowart, a greatNorth-English surname, first appeard abt 1255, Essex Co.,England as Coward & Cowherd. Occupation, Cowherd. Cowherd isalmost exstinct, Coward is very strongly represented inNorth-English dictionaries. The form Cowherd, unmutilated, ispreserved in William Coward, the founder of sect ofCowherdities. He was born at Carnforth, Lancashire, thedistrict where Cowart was one of the best know names. Accordingto family tradition & somewhat authenticated datas, all Cowartname U S derived their origin from two orphan brothers whoemigrated from Wales about, 1690, took residence near New Bern,NC & were school masters. Their names are uncertian, but arebelieved to be Ezekiel & John or Zachariah, believed father ofemigrants brothers was Edward Cowart of Wales. (Further data ofland & war records, census 1790 are listed for children &granchildren of emigrant bros). According, 1790 Census therewere not many Cowart's in this country. The name Cowart wasfound only in three states, NC, SC & MD. In North Carolina,Newbern Dist, we find: Edward, James, John, Elishu, James, AnnNeedham & John, Fayette District; Joel & John; South Carolina,Georgetown Dist; Isham, Ezekiel, Lewis, James & Wm; MD, Talbot &Baltimore Counties; Bridget, Richard Thomas & Fielding. Thereis proven records beginning with Ezekiel Cowart. He is either ason or grandson of emigrant brothers from Wales. Nextsequential portion, Cowart HX is the oldest Authentic writtendocument which is available, written by Jackson Cowart. OrigonalHX is held by Nancy Cowart Brunson, co-author. An exact copy ofJackson Cowart HX is setforth with biographic accounts, some 11pages covering family from Wales till they departed toMississippi.
