Individual:
Notes
1. Hampshire County, Virginia at one time comprised all of today's Hamps hire, Hardy and Mineral Counties in West Virginia; as well as part of today's Morgan County, West Virginia. Hardy County was formed in 1786. Morgan County was formed in 1820. West Virginia was formed in 1863. Mineral County was formed in 1866.
2. Ref. to Abraham Buffington's whereabouts 9 Jun 1801 as cited by Don B owman.
9 June 1801 – Phillip Buffington 1 wolf head $2.50 and Abraham Buffingto n 1 wolf head $2.50
3. What became known as Buffington Island was originally part of Kanawh a County, Virgina. Mason County was formed from Kanawha in 1804. The area became part of Jackson County in 1831. West Virginia was formed in 1863.
4. Ref. to the number of children for Abraham and Margaret Buffington . Don Bowman includes three additional children between 1824 and 1832 between Elvira and Asa with given names unknown. I have not included these children here as sources for this rationale have not been cited.
5. Ref. to the Abraham Buffington household, US Census, 1820 - Gallati n County, Illinois.
Males - 1-9,1; 10-15,3; 26-44,1
Females - 1-9,4; 10-15,2; 26-44,1
Engaged in Agriculture - 4
Editors Note: The age ranges for the adults are within the right range.
6. Ref. to the A. Buffington household, US Census 1840 - Jefferson Count y, Illinois
Males - 5-9,1; 15-19,2; 40-49,1
Females - 15-19,3; 30-39,1; 60-69,1
Total - 9
Employed in Agriculture - 2
Employed in Manufacture and Trade - 1
Editor's Note: This household is assumed to be the household of Abraha m Buffington, give the close proximity to sons Lloyd and P. C. in the same county. It should be noted however that the age ranges are incorrect for Abraham and Margaret. Both should be in the 50-59 range. Here one male is listed as 40-49. One female is listed as 60-69.
7. Ref. to Abraham and Margaret Buffingtons' whereabouts and sale of hi s share in Buffington Island as cited by Don Bowman.
1834-1835 – Jackson Co., VA deed records -- Joseph bought the claims of h is siblings in the 150-acre Buffington Island, 8 shares at $300 each. (It is curious that his older brother, William, apparently had no interest in the island when it was sold.)

2.(2 April 1834) – Asa & Elizabeth Buffington of Pike Co., IL for $300 t o Joseph of Jackson VA.

Buffington/French Cemetery
Farrington, Twp.
From Mt. Vernon go out old state Rt. 15 to the Harmony/Marlow Road turn l eft to go to Harmony turn right on Silence Rd. (1925) it is the road right before you get to the Harmony Church. Stay on this road until it comes to a curve to the right you can also turn left but there is no stop sign and I wouldn't call it a T. When you go thru the curve the road name changes to Duner Lane (2150) stay on this road it will curve to the left and the name changes to E.Pinecone Rd. (1900N) then you will turn right on N. Duke Lane (2150) this road will curve to the left and then it will curve to the right. As soon as you go thru the right curve the old house sits on the left it has a grown up drive way it will be the first place you come to but it is hard to see because of the weeds. When you get out behind the house there is an old barn to the right and an old Chicken Coop? back off to the left you will have to walk a bit before you see the chicken coop. The cemetery is behind
it.
