6. Hampshire County, Virginia at one time comprised all of today's Hamps hire, Hardy and Mineral Counties in West Virginia; as well as part of today's Morgan County, West Virginia. Hardy County was formed in 1786. Morgan County was formed in 1820. West Virginia was formed in 1863. Mineral County was formed in 1866.
7. From Mary L. Ayers
Joel was active in real estate and farming in (Virginia) West Virginia, K entucky and probably owned land in Ohio and Pennsylvania as well. His purchase of Buffington's Island was momentous. This was a small part of his holdings, but his descendants thought of themselves as 'the group from Buffington Island'.
Joel purchased the island November 25, 1797 for the sum of five shilling s from John Pearce Duvall of Mason County Kentucky. The island was 150 acres and supported an enourmous stand of virgin timber.
Editors Note: At the time, what became known as Buffington Island was pa rt of Kanawha County, Virgina. Mason County was formed in 1804. The area became part of Jackson County in 1831. West Virginia was formed in 1863.
8. Buffington Island History, as cited by Jim Hier :
Originally called Amberson's Island before 1797. In November of 1797 th e island was purchased by Joel Buffington from John Pearce Duvall of Mason Co., KY. By 1807 Buffington Island was becoming the predominant name for the island.
Joel died in 1821 and he left his estate to all of his children includin g Magdalena Buffington DeWitt.
Magdalena's brother Joseph, began to purchase his siblings shares in th e island and by 1835 he owned the island but then Joseph and his wife Chloe Harvey Buffington sold the island to James Williamson of Jackson Co., for $2,300.
The really exciting history about the island occured during the Civil Wa r in 1863 when the Confederate general, John Hunt Morgan battled with the Union forces in the area in Ohio around the island. (Ref: Buffington Island by Sue Proctor Miller, Jackson County History Vol 13, No. 1, Jan 1981.
9. On the History of Buffington Island as cited by Don Bowman.
25 November 1797 – “This Indenture made this twenty-fifth day of Novembe r in the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven Between John Pierce Duvall of the County of Mason & Commonwealth of Kentucky on the one part and Joel Buffington of the County of Kanawha and Commonwealth of Virginia on the other part Witnesseth that the said John P. Duvall for and in consideration of the Sum of five Shillings Current money of Virginia in hand paid the receipt whereof is hearby acknowledge hath Given granted Bargained and sold and by these presents – Doth give grant bargain and sell unto the said Joel Buffington his heirs or assigns A Certain Tract or parcel of Land containing by survey one hundred fifty Acres Lying and Being in the County of Kanawha afoarsaid on an Island in the Ohio River above the mouth of Sandy Creek that falls into The Ohio eight or Ten miles above Mills Creek… witnessed by Allyn Prior, Robert McKee and Wm. Bridger at Point Pleasant, Kanawha Co., VA.” -- purchase of the 150 acre “Island above Sandy Creek” from John Pierce Duvall of Mason Co., KY. (Kanawha Co., VA deed book A, pg. 205).
The island is now known as Buffington Island, situated just south of Ster ling Bottom (the present town of Portland, Ohio.) Although only a small part of his holdings, Joel's family kindly thought of themselves as “the group from Buffington's Island.”
History of Meigs County: “Portland on State Route 124… the Buffingtons , Joel & Samuel, with their children, were among the first permanent residents of Portland or Sterling Bottom… and it was for this family that the island in the Ohio River was named… the Buffingtons once had a saw mill there (in Portland).”
Editor's Note: Don Bowman notes above that Buffington Island was onl y a small part of Joel Buffington's land holdings. He notes, for example that Joel Buffington is on the Harrison County, Virginia Tax List for 1799. Harrison County was formed in 1784 from Monongalia County, Virginia.
At one time it included all or part of Barbour, Braxton, Doddridge, Gilme r, Lewis, Marion, Randolph, Ritchie, Taylor, Upshur and Wood counties. Wood County was formed in 1798 from an eastern portion of Harrison County. Mason County was formed in part from Wood County in 1804.
In 1806 after the formation of Mason County, Joel and Thomas Buffington c ontinued to have landholdings outside Mason County in Kanawha County.
Clearly, Joel Buffington did in fact have land holdings beyond the Buffin gton Island area.
10. From Pioneer History of Meigs County
Philip Buffington purchased the Island of Duvol in 1797, ever since know n as Buffington's Island.
Editors Note: Based on family sources, the Pioneer History of Meigs Coun ty is in error. Joel Buffington is known by family members to have purchased Buffington Island, with his children including Philip inheriting it at the time of his death in 1821.

Editor's Note: At the time of Joel Buffington's death in 1821, Jackson C ounty had not yet been formed. Mason County was formed in 1804 from Kanawha County. Jackson County was formed in 1831 from parts of Mason, Kanawha and Wood counties.

9 September 1818 – Joel Buffington of Mason Co., VA sold 250 acres to hi s brother, Thomas Buffington of Cabell Co., VA for $325. The land, on the Big Kanawha River in Kanawha Co., is part of the 1500 acre land survey by John Savage known as the “Pocatalico Survey.” Joel was entitled to the land through the will of his father, William dec'd of Hampshire Co., VA, who bought it from John Savage and later conveyed it to his two sons, Thomas & William. Joel received 250 acres and now conveys it to Thomas. (Deed not recorded until 12 January 1824, after Joel's death.)
24. Ref. to the death and burial of Joel Buffington 1821 as cited by Do n Bowman.
Joel apparently died in 1821, leaving all his holdings to his children . (His brother William's 1824 will gives money to his brother Joel's children.) The Buffington family cemetery was located near Portland (or Sterling Bottom) on flat property which later became known as the Adams farm. Unfortunately, this property fell into other hands and the graveyard was soon plowed up and the stones broken.
25. Ref. to the disposition of the grave marker for Joel Buffington :
a. As cited by Virginia Buffington. 'Several years ago a relative of Jo el's made a visit to Ohio. In searching for Joel's cemetery location they learned the location of the abandoned cemetery which had been overgrown with bushes, nettles, etc. They seached through that area and did find Joel's stone. The next year they made a return trip to Ohio, found the ground had been plowed. The stone had been placed up against a fence. They located the land owners and received permission to take it back to Iowa. It was taken to Iowa and and placed on his grgrgrandson's plot. It is now in a cemetery in Mills County, IA. I saw the stone this past summer. It has faded and difficult to read. The name is visible. Relatives did have a metal plate placed at the bottom of the stone with the important information.'
