Martha Ellen Ravenscraft was born May 4, 1842 and died March 14, 1929.She was 86 years and 10 months when she passed on. I have one reportthat says she was born in PA and one that says she was born in Ohio, soone guess is as good as the other. However, the report from Lloyd &Ethel Kelly says she was born in PA. Church of Latter Day Saints saysOhio though and they are also very accurate. Martha's mother name isunknown and her father is listed only as Ravenscraft. According to herdeath certificate, she died because she was worn out, no disease. Shewas buried March 16, 1929 in the Claysville cemetery.
Notes for MARTHA ELLEN RAVENSCRAFT (compliments of Lloyd & EthelKelley): BIO: This Information was found in the Claysville Recorder:Mrs Martha Toland, widow of the late Solomon Toland, many years a residentof this community of Claysville, died at the home of her son, H.M.Tolandof Houston,Pa. at 2:35 on Thursday 14 March 1929 at the age of 87 yearsold. Funeral services at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, burial in the ClaysvilleCemetery. She leaves the following children; Mrs Mary Miller ofDormont, Julius Lee Toland of Oakdale, H.M.Toland of Houston, C.L.Tolandof Coopertown, Oklahoma, A.C.Toland address unknown. She also leaves 20grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
Ethel Kelley's Aunt Martha Knestrick, Hershel Tolands daughter (Hershelwas one of Solomon and Martha's sons and she lived with him afterSolomons death) told them that Martha was a full blooded CherokeeIndian. Aunt Martha Knestrick was told this story by Martha herself;that a group of Indians settled in Good Intent, PA, a small village (Martha was from this group) in Wash. Co., and in the following year athird of the group went to Ohio, and a third went South into WestVirginia. Ethel & Lloyd have tried to trace Martha's parents, but findthat when they mention the year 1842, research for the Indians just isnot available. Aunt Martha Knestrick also said that Martha was afull-blooded Cherokee and that Martha often told her that.
Another item of interest is that Martha had a daughter, Mary EvalineDonley, born January 25, 1865. This was about 7 years before she marriedSolomon Toland. Mary Donley married Christopher Miller and her obituarysaid she was the daughter of Martha Ellen and Solomon Toland. (Solomonsdaughter? They were not married because Martha was not Christian?? Youknow how funny people were back then about such nonsense. Was Martha aChristian name and what was her birth/Indian name? Will we ever know?Father is listed only as Ravenscraft, where did this come from?)
