Matthias Chipps was possibly b in Morris Co, NJ. It has been very hard to trace his background. Brownfield family tradition spell the name as Schieps. One source also states that through one branch of the family, Martha Schumaker Chipps, granddaughter of Matthias, she could trace her ancestry back to a Mr Brown, a Quaker, who came to America with Wm Penn. Further reseach is needed to resolve these possibilities.
From COLLECTION OF UNPUBLISHED RECORDS: FAYETTE AND GREENE CO, PA, pp 87-88 (located in the DAR Library in Wash, DC): Basil Bowell appointed Captain of the first company of the first Batallion of militia in the County of Fayette, dated 1 May 1789. The muster roll list is dated 14 Aug 1789 and these men are included on the list: Robt. Brownfield, Thos. Bowell, Mathias Chips, Joseph Bowell. THIS
PLACES MATHIAS CHIPS IN FAYETTE CO, PA AS EARLY AS 1789.
From "History of Fayette Co, PA, North Union and South Union Townships" pg 687: "The John DeFord tavern was the first in the new town. His stone building was erected in 1818. The persons who did the stone work were John Sutton, Matthias Chipps, and his son, David Chipps." and "The Morris Tavern was built by Wm Morris in 1823 on an elevated site west of town. This building was of brick. The mason work was done by Benjamin Goodin and Matthias Chipps"
Fayette Co, PA Recorder of Deeds...Deed Bk O, page 147 1/2 (1822) Mathias Chipps sold land to Benjamin Brownfield in Union Twp, Fayette Co, PA. Mathias' wife is given in this deed as Lydia. [NOTE: Some sources say that this was Lydia Sutton. No record to prove this]
From the Union Twp, Fayette Co, PA tax lists:
1810: Mathias Chips was taxed on 67ac, 1 horse, 2 cattle, 1 dog and he was a farmer
1811 to 1822 : he paid taxes on this same 67ac, then he did not pay taxes on the land any more. (In 1822 he sold this land to Benjamin Brownfield as above.)
1837: he was classed as "old" and is not listed on the tax list after 1842.
Joan Ruse writes that Rachel was Mathias' wife and that her maiden name was McFarland. Was this Mathias' second wife? If so, where was Mathias? John McFarland donated land for a cemetery to the Forks of Cheat Baptist Church in Monongalia Co. WV. Rachel McFarland Chipps is named in her father, John McFarland's will [of Fayette Co. PA] as receiving 120 ac of land in PA; and Rachel had sisters, Letitia Brown and Hannah Weltner, both named in the will. Rachel Chipps was named executrix along with Andrew Oliphant. Will Fayette Co. PA, dated 10 June 1835. Will registered, 22 Oct 1839. Rachel McFarland was b Mar 30 1778 Fayette Co. PA d. July 26, 1845. Rachel's mother was Susannah
Cox.
