Notes
Text:
Sir John Forster of Bamborough Castle, Knighted in 1547. He was Knight,an d Capt. and for 3 7 years Lord Warden of the Middle Marches and of her M agesties Councell, established in the N orth, died in 1602. Sir Joh nwa s noted for having many bastard children. He lived to be 102 y ear sold . He paid his servants well as it was noted that the servants coul dspen d money on t heir wife's appearance. It was said that the Armstrongs see m to have found Graham and Forst er girls particularly attractive, and v ice Versa. The same thing happened all along the Bord er: on eof the ch arges levelled against Sir John Forster, was that he tolerate dinter-raci a l marriages, the Forsters with the Humes and Selbys wit hthe Tutherfor ds, the Collingwoods w ith the Halls of Teviotdale, the Reades with the A rmstrongs, and so on. He was able to amas s sufficien twealth to purchas e from Henry VII, all the church lands in Bamburgh, resulting f rom the d issolution of the monastries. Forster sunk deep a she was in Border Poli tics, doubt less had his own private reasons fo rpermitting these allianc es, but these apart he was too o ld and worldly-wise to try to impose gov ernment's law on Nature's. It was considered Treaso n to intermary wit h the Scots. John Forster was considered the only native Warden of the M id dle March as most of the others were imports. This may have been th e fact that he was ther e so long and live dso long. John didn't get th e financial backing of London that he wa sint itled to and often said tha t the payment was not sufficient to maintain his house. The cost s wer e usually paid from his private funds or what could be recovered from rus tling and othe r efforts.John lost two brothers-in-law and one son -in-law, all murdered. They h ad gone out on a decla ired day of peace and some one charged from the Sco tish side which started a fight, killing t he Forster family. At th etim e of John's death he was still being chased by robers. It was said to have been a tradition among the Borderers that when a ma le child was christene d, his right hand should be excluded from the cerem ony, so that in time of feud, he would b e better equiped to strike "unha llowed" blows upon his family's enemies. In 1560 he commande d a large fo rce of light horse at the siege of Berwick, under the Duke of Norfolk. F ollowin g this he was appointed Deputy Governor of Berwick and, i n1563 D eputy Warden of the East Mar che. In 1569 he helped suppress th elarge u prising on the north which was led by the Earl o f Westmorlan dwith the s upport of the Earl of Northumberland. As a result both Alnwick Castl e a nd Warkworth Castle fell into his hands and he stripped them of everythin g of value. He a lso stripped the Abby of glase, led, and types. John F orster and the Earl of Moray, a notabl e killer of reivers, marched in co ncert in 1569 to harry Liddesdale, and burned every house i n the valley . Sir John was restored as Warden until 1595 when he was releaved of hi s duty pa rtly because of age and partly because of renewed charges of di shonesty and incompetence. B y 1569 the boarder conditions had changed wi th King James uniting the two kingdoms. He wen t home and spent his decl ining years at Bamborough Castle. Even though he had been a frien d of t he Scots in his day there were those who regarded him with deadly hostili ty, and on a n ight in October 1597 a band of 30 riders came over the lin e to Bamborough with the intent t o settle his accounts at last. Forste r was in his bed but Lady Forster saw the rader scommin g up the stairs a nd with great presents of mind she got the doo r closed and bolted. 2n d So n of Sir Thomas Foster of Alderstone, of Bamburgh castle, by grant o f the Crown: dep. warde n or warden of the Middle or East Marches for 3 7 years: knighted 1547: sheriff of Northumber land in 1549. Will Dated 1 601: proved 15th Jul 1802, by Dame Isabell Forster the widow and Ni chola s Forster the son, heirs of Bamburo Castle. Sir John was a valiant man an d he took an ac tive part in many wars. He was the escort to Mary Quee n of Scotts over Halidon Hill towar ds Berwick. John sent a letter to hi s cousin which reads as follows--"Cousin Forster"- After r ighte hearti e commendations unto you, ye shal understand yt I have received yr lette r wherei n you desire to know of y rpedigree, for that yr grandfather, a s ye have learned descneded ou t o fthe house of Etherston, and to know w hether he was one elder, second ,or third, or fort h brother and wherefo r he fled and countrie of Northumberland, I assure you I can trowhlie s a tisfie you therein; for you grandfather, called Roger Foster was my gre at uncle, and there we re XIX brothers and he was the second brother, Hi s fathjer was called Thomas Forster, and hi s mother's name was Fethersto nehaugh; his eldest son was called Thomas Forster, who was my gr eat-gran dfather, and it happened that four of the said brethern at a hunting, an d rideing hom eward throug ha town called Newham, for the bitting of a gr eyhound they and a compan yof Karr s fell out, and there began bloodshe d and fueds which continue duntil there was but one Kar r of the greyhoun d living; during which time my grandfather and yours and another brothe r o f theirs, called Nicholas Forster- mine being twenty years old, yrs 1 7 years, and Nichol a s achild of 14, being a-hunting-were waited on by o pne of the Karrs a ndtwo of their allyanc e called Too and King, who se t upon the three brothers and Too were slain there, and the Kar r fled, i nsomuch that after the said slaughter, my grandfather flet to Ridsdale an d ye counti e, because he was safe there, and yours fled unto south parts , of whom I never heard of sinc e yt time till now... At my house near Al nwick, 17th Apr, 1590, your loving cousin, John Fors ter.He married Jane Radclyff, heiress to the Blanchland estates, which in thi s way, became part o f the Forsters estate. By Jan he had several daught ers. He also sowed quite a few wild oat s and had a number of other chil dren, including sons, who were illegitimate. His heir, Nicho las was bor n out of wedlock, possibly by Isabel Sheppard, whom Sir John late rmarrie d as hi s second wife. John's Funeral feast was his final flamboyant ges ture. It cost over 450 poun ds which was rougly equal to one third of hi s estate, and bearing in mind what he had paid fo r Bamburgh ,it must hav e been quite a party.
