Text: A story told to his son-in-law Sam Lane some years ago. Clarence said that at about the age of 15 he was living with his grandmother Rachel Davis and felt that he was being given all the bad chores by his uncles and grandmother so he left home and started hitch-hiking across the United States from Illinois to California. He worked his way by doing odd jobs and chores for farmers and people along the way. After a few months in California he returned to Illinois and shortly after that joined the army.
Clarence enjoyed fishing most of his life. He lived to fish. He enjoyed fishing with several of his grandsons and before that with his wife Lucy and daughters. Nancy was the tomboy of the daughters and enjoyed fishing with her Dad.
