Masterson Clark PA-IL
This file is a companion to both the Jesse Heustis NY->IL and Plummer Expedition files on GenCircles. In this collection we find brother George Heustis, who moved with the rest of his family (except for brother Jesse) to Dearborn County, Indiana, around 1818. George did not marry into a Maine emigrant family as did the family members included in the Plummer Expedition file. He married Catherine Bealer of Ohio, and before 1850 moved his family from Indiana to Tennesee.

At least two of George and Catherine's sons, Stephen and Andrew Jackson, enlisted in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. This is a fairly dramatic development; Jesse's son Van Rennselaer and George's brother Oliver's grandson John Henry were Union soldiers. It appears that at least some of George's brother Major's sons, who lived in Texas in 1860, moved to Kansas and served in the Union Army as well.

Here we see the true divisions in the nation at the time: first cousins on opposite sides of the great conflict. One can only wonder if any ever faced another on the same battlefield!

The title of this file derives from the family of Andrew's wife, Ellen Clark. Interestingly, Andrew married Ellen in Illinois in 1867, not too far from where Jesse Heustis settled after moving from New York circa 1856. Other more distant Heustis relatives were in the area as well. Later, Andrew and his family and in-laws moved to Missouri, then Arkansas.

Ellen's great-grandfather was Masterson Clark, who, according to St. Clair County, Illinois, genealogists died in Pennsylvania in 1783. His son Joshua moved to pioneer St. Clair County between 1805 and 1811 with many members of the Rittenhouse family, of which his wife Hannah was a member. Joshua had a son Masterson of his own, and Joshua's son David was father of Ellen Clark Heustis. The 1850 Census in St. Clair County was interesting in that those born in the County were indicated as such, rather than just the State of birth as in most locales.
