| William Huestis of Yarmouth |
This file documents one of the "disconnected" Huestis Loyalist families of Nova Scotia. Many of the Loyalist families with this surname descend from Thomas Huestis, b. 1759 in White Plains, New York, who migrated to Nova Scotia around 1783. Some descend from Thomas' uncle Caleb Heustis, b. ca. 1723 in Rye, New York.
However, this William is said to have been born in "Staten Island, NJ"(!?) in 1778, and is apparently not of the aforementioned lines. A similar situation exists for the descendants of Philip Huestis, born about 1764: his parents are likewise unknown.
However, based on the date of birth and family naming conventions, there would seem to be a reasonable chance that William's father and mother were Edward Huestis and Hannah McConnell, married December 19, 1778 in New York. I have identified this Edward as a descendant of David Hustis of Westchester, then Dutchess County, NY. Informed speculation, but speculation nonetheless.
