| David Heustis of Herkimer County, NY |
This sketch is a synthesis of secondary and Census sources giving a tenative outline of the family of David Heustis of Herkimer County, NY, who was living there by 1800. His son Michael and his family, who later removed to Jefferson County, NY, Town of Rodman, are fairly well documented by the Jefferson County Genealogical Society and in other sources. David's grandson Jonathan was an early prominent Methodist Episcopal minister. Jonathan's son Alexander was a well-known educator and Shakespearean scholar recognized in the The Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans. The rest of the family is less well known.
David's father is given here as Robert Heustis of Dutchess County, NY. This is based on the work of Mrs. L. C. Davison, privately published as THE DESCENDANTS OF RUFUS EDWARDS AND RUTH (HUESTIS) EDWARDS and reproduced at the link for the Internet. The naming patterns in this family and the dates involved suggest that this family descends from David Hustis of colonial Westchester County, NY. This David's father was in turn the Robert Hustis of Westchester County, 1626-1704, who figures as an ancestor in my Jesse Heustis contribution also on the GenCircles site.
The latter David, born circa 1684, removed from Westchester County to the Town of Philipstown in Dutchess County (in the portion now part of Putnam County) with his large family, and was one of the first Commissioners of Dutchess County, laying out the original roads. A son Robert is ascribed by some to this earlier David. A Robert "Husted" is recorded as having married Helena Parmentier/Palmatier in 1742 in the Dutch Reformed Church of Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, NY. This would be right in time for Mrs. Davidson's accounting of the younger David's birth. Other descendants of the older David married into the Parmentier/Palmatier family later. However, the most highly regarded Huestis family scholar, professional genealogist Gordon Remington, is not certain that the Robert Heustis / Husted of Dutchess County, Beekman Precinct, is descended from the David born 1684. He cites that Robert died around 1746, and that his putative brother Jonathan took over his land lease. Remington then adds that a later document shows Jonathan has brothers Caleb and Joseph. This suggests the lineage above.
But, according to Remington, the birthdate of Robert would seem too early to have been Mary Haight's son, so it may be that the Robert referenced in the tax and marriage records of Dutchess County descends from the line of Angell Husted of Connecticut, the older brother of Robert of Westchester County. This because a few of Angell's many descendants moved from Connecticut to Dutchess County in the same period, but generally to different precincts.
There is additional evidence that Remington may not have considered. The subject David's wife is given by the Davison work (and others) as Elizabeth Wooley. In 1810, Jonathan Hustis (son of the Jonathan mentioned above) in Dutchess County has close neighbors with the names Abel and Edward Wooley! Since Edward and Abel are the ALSO names of sons of the subject David, and since Abel especially is rare to otherwise non-existent in the Heustis lineages, I think it suggests that the titular David is from the same locale, and is the grandson of the elder David, and NOT the great-grandson of the older David's uncle Angell.
A quick note about the spelling of this family's surname: very often in Census records and in other resources, the "eu" spelling (Heustis) is used by this branch of the family. However, spelling is variable, and may appear as Huestis or Hustis or many other variants. For instance, Census transcriptions of one of these families was "Henstis"; closer examination suggests that the "n" was intended as a "u". After the Colonial period the Husted spelling is generally used only by descendants of Angell.

A confirming source of family history for this data is available on the Internet! Pictures and a transcript of the family pages for the Bible of Leon D. Huestis is available here. The data therein confirms much of the data about the Michael Heustis family in the L. C. Davison source mentioned above in a more accessible form. Many thanks to Tracy St. Claire for providing this information!

Jean Whitney is a descendant of Abel Huestis. She has graciously provided me with many updates, beginning with the correct allocation of Charles Giles Huestis as a son of Abel. Abel's children also include Sylvester Heustis whose children posed many Census riddles. This input has helped me resolve many research loose ends.
