| South Carolina Heustess Family |
|
This southern branch of the Heustis family, concentrated in the Marlboro, Chesterfield and Darlington counties of South Carolina (the modern remnants of the early Cheraws District) is somewhat mysterious. The spelling of the name is variable, but typically includes the terminal double-s. Family historians who contribute to Internet genealogy sources seem to have little idea about family origins (apologies for this bluntness.) The earliest Heustess I have found is James in the 1790 US Census of the Cheraws District. This repeated name and those of the apparent descendants suggest descent from the line of Robert Heustis of Westchester County, NY: John, Samuel, David, Jesse (an early name) and William. There are some unique names in this line: Elhanon and Matthew appear three times each. Some of the early neighbors of these families carry surnames associated with Quaker families, likewise suggesting NY Heustis heritage. The birth dates suggest a common ancestor born about 1725. The James Heustis born 1721 in Westchester County, New York has few known descendants. It is possible that he is the link to this line. New Information: A descendant of this line has contacted me for collaborative purposes. Perhaps some of the mystery around this line can be resolved! I have switched to the South Carolina spelling for all but the earliest members of the line to promote the research.
