| Jesse Heustis - NY ---> IL |
This contribution describes the family tree of Jesse Heustis, born at the end of the 18th century in the Town of Clinton, Dutchess County, NY, into a family with colonial roots. He migrated to Fayette County, Illinois, in the middle of the 19th century.
Jesse's known descendants are included, as is his direct line back to Robert Husted the immigrant, who pioneered Connecticut. The link between Jesse's father William and grandfather Caleb and grandmother Amy Bishop has recently been documented by a transcript of Caleb's 1778 will. Given this link, additional lines of ancestors are included, including a speculation concerning great-grandmother Sarah Ferris.
Jesse's father William Heustis deserves a lengthier discussion here. We know that William was a blacksmith from property transactions in Westchester County, NY, just before and after his 1792 marriage to his wife Rhoda. Then in 1800, we find him in the Census of the Town of Clinton, in Dutchess County, NY, where he is a neighbor to his cousins descended from David Hustis. I believe he is enumerated in Sullivan County, NY, in the 1810 US Census with his family. The presence of the Reverend Henry Schoonmaker in that county may be a strong indicator, as William's sixth son was named after that clergyman shortly after the family sold its land in Dutchess County in 1804. One source of persistent bafflement is Rhoda. Family researchers have been unable to determine her maiden name, although I have some unproven suspicions!
William's ultimate fate is unknown, since his family, with exceptions of the subject Jesse and probably brother James, apparently migrated to Dearborn County, Indiana around 1819 without him (certainly Jesse's two oldest brothers were there according to the 1820 Census records, and it would appear from the count of residents that all others were accounted for), probably after a short stay on the Ohio side of the Ohio River that separates Dearborn County from Cincinnati. The Heustis family married into eight families who had migrated from Maine in 1817, in an expedition led by the Rev. Daniel Plummer. I have contributed another file describing the Plummer Expedition. When Jesse traveled to Illinois in 1856, he may have visited his family in Indiana.
Jesse's eldest son Henry certainly returned to his aunts, uncles and cousins in Dearborn County, settling in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. His family is found there in 1860 and thereafter, with one son born in IL in 1857. Jesse's son Townsend married a Dearborn County lady, then returned to Fayette County! Some of the Dearborn County population followed their kin to Fayette County as well.
Also included herein is a slightly speculative Census-derived descendant tree for William Heustis' brother, Noah. I hope to encourage discussion of this branch with this effort.
