- Title: The Norris Family of MD and VA
Author: Harry Alexander Davis
Publication: 1941
Page: p. 24
Text: Born Talbot County, MD, in 1685, he moved with his parents to Kent County, MD, about 1695-96
. He married there in Jan 1712 Sarah, daughter of James Breward, b. 1690.
James Breward had a patent for land, 200 acres, called "Breward's Reserve", surveyed 10 Nov 1 706, on the north side of the Chester River. Samuel Norris owned 170 acres of this land and had a certificate for a resurvey dated 1732 and it appears the survey was not completed. He also owned at the date of his death land called "Rumford", 74 acres. This tract originally contaned 125 acres, surveyed 5 Mar 1718 for John Reading and patented 10 May 1723. There is no record as to how Samuel Norris came into possession of this tract. He also owned land called "Castle Carey", 46 acres. No original record of this tract has been found.
Samuel was elected Vestryman 30 Mar 1730, Shrewsbury Parish. He dated his will 23 Dec 1735 a nd it was probated 20 May 1736 by his sons Samuel and Richard. In this will he devises:
To wife Sarah; To son Samuel - gets land called "Casle Carey", 46 acres; To son Richard - get s land called "Rumford", 74 acres; To sons Daniel and George - land called "Breward's Reserve", 170 acres equally divided.
Other children not mentioned. The lands were so divised that in case Samuel died without iss ue that his share would pass to Richard, and so on down.
Sarah survived him and married 2 Mar 1741 Job Coe of Kent County, MD. Samuel kept a family r ecord in his prayer book, said book passed down to son Samuel. An abstract of this record shows: Thomas Norris, grandfather, born in England, left home when 11 years of age and went to sea; he had a sister named Alice and an uncle named Cuthbert who was a high official in the Church. Grandmother was Ann Norris. Father was Robert Norris, b. VA Dec 1647. Mother was Tabitha Norris, b. MD. Then follows the family his own which is verified by Parish records and his will.
