BIOGRAPHY: A Genealogical Dictionary of The First Settlers of New England, Before 1692. B
y James Savage. Originally Published Boston, 1860-1862, Reprinted with "Genealogical Notes and Errata,"excerpted from The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. XXVII, No. 2, April, 1873, pp. 135-139 And A Genealogical Cross Index of the Four Volumes of the Genealogical Dictionary of James Savage, by O. P. Dexter, 1884. Volume 4, page 128. SMITH, Philip of Wethersfield, second son of Samuel, brought at one year old by his father from England, made a freeman in 1654, married in 1657 to Rebecca, the youngest daughter of Nathaniel Foote. He soon removed and is the same who in Hadley, among its new settlers took the freeman's oath for Massachusetts the 26th day of March 1661; was representative for Hadley 1677, 1680-1684, after which last he died the 10th day of January following. He was a selectman, Lieutenant of horse militia, and deacon yet "murderous with an hideous witchcraft, that filled all those parts of New England with astonishment," as most minutely is told in the Magn. Volume VI, page 70. Still the wonder did not so far outrun conscience and common sense, as to prevail on the trial of Mary Webster, charged for such clear malignities not only against Smith, the hypochondriac suffered but others; even though she was before a jury at Boston, then peculiarly exposed to false impressions, she was acquited and died peaceably at Hadley. Years more were needed for the full triumph of the devil and Cotton Mather. His Children were Samuel born in January 1659; John born the 18th day of December 1661; Jonathan born in 1663; Philip born in 1665; Rebecca born in 1668; Nathaniel born in 1671; Joseph born in 1674, Harvard College in 1695; and Ichabod born the 11th day of April 1675-1676; all the eight are mentioned in his will. His widow married the 2nd day of October 1688 to Major Aaron Cook, of Northampton, who died the 6th day of September 1690, and she died at Hadley, the 6th day of April 1701. His only daughter, Rebecca early in 1686 married to George Stillman of Hadley
