Text: !Listed as an heir in father's will in Loudoun Co., VA, dated 31 Jan 1787 and
proved 4 Apr 1788.
Listed as deceased in the 6 Nov 1832 deposition of his son, Samuel, in
Henderson Co., KY, relative to the pension application for Capt. Isaiah MARKS.
!Additional data from Frances Jones, 108 St. Leo Drive, Cahokia, IL 62206.
"Raised his family in Loudoun County, Va. On Aug. 11, 1777 he signed an oath
as Ensign in the Revolutionary War. He served in Morgan's Riflemen. See page
16 of thursday, July 15, 1954 issue of "Blue Ridge Herald".
On land which he inherited from his father, he erected a brick home,
which he sold 12 Sep 1812. He was in Henderson Co., KY by Dec. 4 1813 when he
bought 400 acres of land from William Black.
In his will, written Sept. 24, 1819 and probated Oct 1821, he divided the
1000 acres (received by will from is brother Isaiah) between eight of his
children, and designating that each receive 150 acres. [** I'm still working
on land records to see how this could have occurred].]
The land he purchased from William Black was left to his children Margery
Marks Cruise and Elisha. When Webster County was formed, this 400 acres was
taken into that county. The 1000 acres survey is still in Henderson County.
John, as well as his brother Thomas are almost certainly buried in the
Crooks-Dixon-Pritchett Cemetery which is located on the 1000 acre survey.
Although there are no "Marks" stones in this cemetery, it was mentioned in a
deed of his son Samuel in 1824, and was known as the MARKS Cemetery until the
turn of the century."
