Jean was a French born immigrant. He had immigrated through Ireland to
Somerset Co., MD.
Jean was a French Huguenot who, as a young orphan boy, left France to escape persecution after the Edict of Nantes was revoked in 1685. In theEdict of Nantes, Henry IV had granted equal rights to hes Protestant andCatholic subjects, and for about 3/4 of a century, the Huguenots, orFrench Calvinists, had enjoyed comparative safety, but Henry's successor,Louis XIV, renewed the persecution of his Protestant subjects, imposingdisabilities and fines upon them. When he revoked the Edict of Nantes,endeavoring to suppress all forms of worship except the Catholic faith,he drove from his dominions more than half a million of his most usefuland industrious subjects.
Tradition states that Jean came to America with the William Wallace family and that he "may" have married a member of William's family aroundthe time that he had left Ireland and before marrying Katherine. Once inSomerset Co., Jean and the William Wallace family became a part of whatwas the First Presbyterian Community in America. It was located atManokin and included not only the William's and Brevard families butalso the Alexander families. These families intermarried extensively andthey evenually migrated togather to western North Carolina. Some of thesefamilies have been found in America as early as 1648. Jean's youngestchild was born only about nine years before his father's death at aboutage 60.
