Text: Orcutt's History of Stratford says that the information about the children of Francis came from two deeds found among the records of a private family, given by Francis Barnum to his "six sons," named in the order given here, and by a quitclaim deed given to Abel Barnum by "Mary Barnum, widow," for any claims she might have to lands which came to him "from his hon'd Father and my Late Husband, Francis Barnum." The latter document is dated May 20, 1741. In one of the deeds Francis Barnum mentions, besides these six sons, "my other heirs," indicating that there were other children. One of them was certainly Mary, who married Daniel Wells of Danbury and later of New Milford.
In the The Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut appears the notation that Capt. James Beebe and Mr. Franciss [sic] Barnham attended the General Assembly at New Haven 8-21 Oct. 1713 as representatives for Danbury.
The same source notes that Francis also represented Danbury at a General Assembly held from May 12 to June 2, 1715. During that assembly the following action was taken: Upon the petition of Dea. Saml Benidict [sic] and his daughter in law, Elizabeth Benidict, father and widow to Thomas Benidict, late of Danbury, deceased, shewing that the said deceased did in his life time sell five acres of land unto Mathew Bowten and received full satisfaction for the same, and also made four exchanges of land to mutual satisfaction, not confirmed by deeds in the life time of the said deceased: This Assembly grant full power to the petitioners and Mr. Francis Barnham to make, sign and execute, in behalf of the heirs of the said deceased, full and ample deeds of the said land exchanged or agreed to be exchanged by the said deceased on his part, provided the persons with whom the agreement of exchange was made by the said deceased do on their parts make and execute full and ample deeds of such lands as they agreed to exchange as aforesaid unto the heirs of the said deceased. This Assembly further grants full power and authority to the petitioners and the said Mr. Francis Barnham, to make, sign and execute a full and ample deed of the abovementioned five acres of land unto the abovesaid Mathew Bowten, pursuant to the bargain of the said deceased; allowing such deeds made as aforesaid as authentick unto all intents and purposes as if the said deceased had in his life time personally made the same.
The following entry is found in The Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut: "At a meeting of the Governour and Council in New London, in Connecticut, April 12, 1716, in the second year of his Majesties reign. .... This Assembly do establish and confirm Mr. Francis Barnum of Danbury to be Ensign of the company or trainband in the town of Danbury aforesaid."
